bolt-ons are more easily repaired than either of the others. Originally Posted by GuitarGuru88

more sustain and often smaller heel than bolt-on, easier to repair than neck-thruOriginally Posted by GuitarGuru88

best sustain, smallest heel

also (in most cases) cheaper guitars will be bolt-on, and neck thru is often more expensive than the others (set neck kinda goes all over though)

EX hit the high points, one thing to add is that the bolt on has a more edgey or articulate sound. The neck thru is very similiar, I say the set in is the least articulate.

Luke

EX and Luke hit good points there....

Bolt on-
Easier to replace
Faster, more articulate response, no midrange spike that neckthru adds.
Brighter because of no glue in the joint.

Set Neck- in theory better playability (depends on heel), darker tone with a more quot;sluggish quot;response

Neck thru - In theory better playability (also depends on heel), tonally about halfway between a set-neck and a Bolt on with an accentuated lower midrange.... Many say they supposedly sustain better, but in my professional opinion that´s a myth.

Sustain is a product on many factors.... the neck has to fit tightly, definitely, and this is easier to acheive on a neckthru, which is almost certainly where this comes from, becasue the construction method itself leaves less room for error

As ffar as the price goes, the only reason that most people think bolt ons are cheap is because most of the POS we get from the far east is bolt on to cut manufacturing costs..... this is because a bolt on has the advantage of being able to be the most shoddily constructed and STILL WORK, an impossible feat fpr a set-neck or neckthru.... If conversely you´ll look at high end manufacturers like J/C, PRS, Suhr, Grosh, Alembic, ESP (NOT Ltd!)...., you´ll see that Bolt ons and neckthrus are very similar in price... just with the difference that a 99$ Set-neck will probably NEVER work
