Yes, what do you people think about this amp? Is it as good as it is said to be, for rock, hard rock, metal etc.?
How loud do you have to play it to get some good tones out of it? It's not because I want one right now (unless I get a good offer thrown at me), right now I need to get better, but when I do get better, I will want a better amp, and I'm interested in the 5150.
So, post your experiences with it..And if you have soundclips, feel more than welcome to post them. Thank you very much.
A LOUD distortion monster. Not much of a clean amp but it`s great for metal and hard rock. I owned the head and combo and they sounded good a bedroom levels but the 5150 needs to be cranked up a bit to get to it`s full potential. One problem , when that suckers cranked up people in the next county will hear you!
Is it the same with the combo?

I thought the head with JJs and thru 4x12s sounded better the the combo. Still , the combo is a loud mutha. Forums bro VHoholic plays his combo chassis thru a 4x12 and it sound killer. Use the earch function for some of his sound clips.
Good workingman's hard rock/metal amp. Basically a cheaper take on the soldano SLO.
I love the amp, the clean channel is ok but its nothing to shout about, though its not really that bad either to be honest, but its no fender twin. the lead channel however is amazing, dynamic and powerfull, extremely loud, lots of gain and tight as hell.
The 5150 and XXX are essentially the best amps for extreme metal under a grand.
Check out this cover I did of VH's Panama. I use a 5150 combo with just an analog delay in the efx loop and graded JJ's pre amp; power tube's.
from : localhost/had a many amp's and the 5150 is a great amp if you know how to use it's versatility. It's an absolute animal if you use harsh tubes (like ruby's,some sovtek) and keep the distortion level on 6.5, 7 plus. Much different amp with graded tubes, the gain on 4.5 and low output pup's. Let's it breath and has a much more open sound without the preamp buzz
At higher volume's (past 2), the power tube's take over the pre's a bit more and it's excellent. Basically, it's a pro amp with a huge roar and ton's of gain on tap! I love mine.
They're called 6505's now, aren't they?
Yeah..But I am looking for a used 5150, as it is probably cheaper than a 6505..
yeah vh's endorsement ran out with peavey, so theyre the 6505. you can find a 5150 for around 5-600 on ebay, im thinknig of getting one down the road, and putting casters on the 212 combo so i dont throw out my back. freakin thing weighs 85 pounds!
My 5150 head and cab is the best amp i own....... It is killer for the higan and low end thumb that heavy metal and hard rock guitarist want..... I wish my JCM 800 sounded as good as my 5150.. I use mine to play a lot of tunes by The Who, Van Halen, Zeppelin, and so on... works great for me! I also wanted a clean channel and i found a switching system so i could switch over to a Peavey Classic 50 for clean tones... great set up!
