Is the squier standard strat worth buying to mod and experiment with. I really like it over the mex strat except for the agathis body wood. Anyone know about it? i know its not the best of woods.

I think it's a great guitar to mod. You don't have to worry about ruining it's resale value, and if you screw up some stuff learning on it...so what? Learn to change pickups, take the trem on and off, set it up. Take the bridge apart to learn how the saddles and intonation screws work....ect. Plus, it's cheap enough that you can buy it and actually afford some new pups, tuners, whatever you want to do.

I think it's a great choice.

1 to what Jeff said.

Cool, yeah i want something to experiment on, and something thats playable at the same time.

Try an S101 guitar. I recently read on an ebay bid that the hardwood body they use is actual alder. You can get them cheap @ eBay for about $70-100

Do you mind if I ask why? I'm being completely serious.

I found that the SX strat copies from Rondo Music are fun as hell to mod, mine currently has a custom p90 in the bridge, along with the Blackice overdrive cap on the Pull end of a push pull. its just a nifty little 99 dollar guitar

Just for the record agathis is a great wood! IMO it is a better wood for guitars that poplar, and lots of guys have poplar guitars! I had a DeArmond M-75 that had an agathis body, and that was a great sounding guitar...it sounds alot like alder, even though it looks much more like mahogany. I say do it!

I'd look for a mid 80's to late 80's Made In Japan Fender Squire. Great guitars and if you're patient you can find them pretty cheap on Ebay. I've never paid more than $200 for one and they are some of my favorite Strats that I own. Usually an alder body and real nice maple necks, often with a nice rosewood fingerboard. Lew

JB_from_hell, i like it over the mex strat because of the frets, the alnico pickups (will change anyway), and the price tag. It's $170 less which leaves more money to mod the crap out of it
I just dont know anything about agathis

Get an Squier Affinity Strat which has an alder body...

a bit off-topic but still about modding a cheap guitar: i recently got a near mint Platinum B.C Rich Virgin(140€) and it needs some tuning. It sounds really good after installing a set of emgs(81/60) in it(agathis imo sounds pretty good and doesn't deserve all the flameing about it). I still need a new bridge and tuners. i thought about sperzel locking tuners and a schaller tuno-matic with roll-saddles(not sure about the english term but this should get close). Any other suggestions for those parts?

I'm with Lew go for a MIJ Squier, I recently bought one and am blown away by the build quality. all it needs is a decent set of pickups, SD's of course!

I'm going to go against the grain and say you should look for one of the 80's Peavey predators. They can be had for less than 100 dollars, have goo necks, and are even made in the US.

1 to that. I'm currently in the process of modding a '93 Pred, which I like better than any strat I've ever played (granted, I haven't gotten ahold of any of the $3k models, but it's certainly a step up from any Squire you could find IMO)

I´m not sure of the model, but i have played a US made Peavey quot;stratquot; at school, and it´s actually very nice playing, WAY better than a squier!

Yamaha pacifica's are also pretty nice playing guitars, I'd probs go yamaha over squier, unless it was a particually good squier.
