You know that intro riff, what's that? A Tele bridge pickup, or a Strat?

This is a type of tone I'd like to get sometimes but can't achieve with humbuckers.

Not sure exactly what Keith used on that one,but the open tunings(Open G) are the big part of getting it right...Same goes for Brown Sugar,Start Me Up,Can't You Hear Me Knockin,and tons of other Stones tunes...

Keith was an Ampeg user at that time with les pauls,335,Teles,Dan Armstrong,and all soughts of guitars...

I believe it was his old blonde Tele, IIRC. Some folks say that lick was played by Ry Cooder, anyone else hear about that?

I've always thought that it was the tele, too.

Probably is the Tele..

Its a 5 string tele with a gibson PAF....
He likes the open string tones.... The MICAWBER tele is pretty famous....

Tele Bridge wound with 43 gauge wire 10K, thats what he likes those old rare Broadcaster 43 gauge 10K PUPPYS.. bRIGHT AND POWERFUL..

I always thought that was a P90. He used a LP Jr. on a lot of their best stuff back then.

Tune to open G, flip to your bridge bucker, get a little bit of dirt going, not much, just a little, and that'll get you in the ballpark. I love Keith's Tele tone.

Don't forget to shoot up with heroin beforehand. This really gets you in the Keith Richards mood.I'm just kidding, of course.

FWIW, this thread inspried me too-- I'm going to wind up a 43 gaugr enamel 10k flat pole bridge and add my PAF to the nek of a 1975 Tele I have collecting dust .
Funny thing is I play alot of Roy Buchanan sounding stuff, Roy suposidily turned down an offer to join the stones..
I will play a few Stones songs now on my set and Buchanan-a-size them and we can see for ourselfs what it might have sounded like if Roy not only joined the Stones but was also allowed to solo like a mad man..heheehe!

Yep Roy did turn down the Stones offer...Would have been a weird mix anyway.

Richard Thompson was also on deck to be a Stone. That would have been a real weird turn......

I'm going to take a few Stone Rythyms and just solo all over them-- killing them dead into lead solo hell!! Yippie!

It is already a weird mix.

I agree, it probably was the Tele. However, I used to get that tone with a '69 Les Paul Goldtop through a pre-CBS Twin I had back in the day. That riff has a nasal quality to it that you can get by messing with the EQ.

Ry has said the lick was his and that the Stones more or less stole it from him and wrote Honky Tonk Woman around it. My understanding is that they hired him and brought him into the studio for inspiration and fresh ideas, he showed them some stuff, and then they took his ideas and ran with them. I dunno what model guitar is used on that cut...it's two guitars though and Mick Taylor's part is as important to the flavor as Keiths. At least I've always assumed that was the two of them playing together...

I think HTW was recorded right before Mick Taylor joined, but maybe Ry is playing on that song with Keith. He was on the albums that came out before and after that single , so maybe he is the second guitar on that tune.

Was Keith using the Dan Armstrong by that time?
