Can an Ibanez five way be used as a 3 way or even a two way? I'm leaving the middle pickup unhooked and just want to be able to select the neck and bridge hums seperately in the usual positions. I guess my question is which lug on the switch do I connect to the volume pot? Do I need to bridge any of the other lugs on the switch? This is a RG550 beater. Thanks for any help.
Logically, it would make sence to use a 5-way as a 3- or 2-way switch. You would probably just leave the middle spots on the switch blank and when you have the switch at that position, it would act like a killswitch.
I think thats how it would work, but someone like Artie will probably come across this thread and correct what i have wrong.
alex.
There's several different ways to do this. I have my Strat's 5-way wired as a 3-way. If you just remove the middle wire, you'll have:
1 amp; 2. neck
3. Off
4 amp; 5. bridge
I moved my bridge hot wire to the middle position, so I have:
1. neck
2. neck amp; bridge
3. bridge
4. bridge
5. Off
Since my middle pup is on a separate switch, 4 amp; 5 allow me to have:
4. bridge and middle
5. middle
And then, of course, in #2, I can have all three. (My favorite position.)
There's probably other options, but thats a start.
Hi guys, thanks for the help. I connected the pups to the outermost lugs and am confused how to connect to the volume pot. The switch is an ibanez 5 way with eight lugs. Does it matter which one I solder to when connecting to the volume pot?
The first combo you lined out Artie is what I'm hoping for.
It definitely matters.
If you used the outside two, then short the inside two together, and take both to the volume control. (Only one wire is necessary.)
Or, do this: if we assume the terminals are numbered:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Then connect the bridge to 1, the neck to 3, and take 4 to the volume control. Doesn't matter which end you start counting from.
Thanks Artie! Now I just gotta sneak away from work and try it.
