I'm thinking of building a guitar and I want to know what you guys think.

Swamp ash body - strat shape (only a light clearcoat)
Maple neck with rosewood fretboard (the neck from my Ibanez)
Phat cat in the bridge
covered jazz in the neck
tune-o-matic bridge
string through body
one volume, one tone
3 way switching position 1 (all the way to the bridge): phat cat only position 2 (in the middle): phat cat and one coil of Jazz - hum cancelling position 3 (all the way to the neck): jazz full

thanks

Sounds interesting. The Phat-Cat wouldn't be my choice, but otherwise sounds good!

bump

the phat cat is a single-coil right?
couldn't it be overpowered by the jazz?
or is that why you only want one of the jazz coils on in the middle position?

Ah, my favorite discussion- Imagining what it will sound like and comparing to reality-

Swamp maple bolt on = bright and snappy in my book and the rosewood would back it off a bit-

So a pcat bridge might give you the bright tele p90 sound that I just love for country, pop and up to medium rock-

The Jazz in the neck should be clear and as long as it isn't too bright, again I see similar applications as with the bridge-

The combo sound is likely to be similar to the combined tele sound which again falls in a good place for these styles- I think you will have to disable the noise canceling coil of the pcat, but assuming that is no problem?

Actually would provide 2 alternatives that would make me consider a 5 way- 2 singles in series can be a butt kicking combo for cutting leads and if the pups you have picked aren't too bright, would think this would be a great way to get more punch out of this interesting combo-

And what would that leave for the last position? Ok, this is a weird one and I'm trying it on my mahogany p90 right now, but one of the most awesome cutting sounds I have ever heard comes from Glenn Phillips (not the Toad Phillips- Instead the wildman from the Glenn Phillips band) and he got a powerful, rude, cutting in your face sound from singles in series, out of phase-

Yep, that's a weird one and I would understand if you stick to 3 way- But I like the way you are thinking overall- Not just another 2 PAF sound!

Good luck and looking forward to your report!

it's was just a request for opinions. I may have changed my mind already. I'll keep you guys posted on what I actually decide on.

thanks for all your input.
