Maybe I'm just hearing things but...I was just listening to quot;Poweragequot; and there are few times where Angus gets this tone that sounds...almost like burning wood(?). It's compressed, not distorted, but so damn fat and different. It is NOT his normal tone. I can't tell whether he's in the neck or bridge or what's rolled back, but it is very unique. Specifically, I hear it at these points:

1) First notes of quot;Down Payment Bluesquot; solo
2) quot;Bullet to Bite Onquot; solo
3) On the album (errr I mean CD..or MP3) quot;Let There be Rockquot; he gets it during the interplay between him and Bon on quot;Go Downquot;. Am I nuts or are you AC/DC guys hearing this tone?

J

not sure what album you are talking about (I don't OWN any AC/DC...never have)..but there was a brief time he used MESA's...after Back in Black and for Those About to Rock...I know that much...

hmmm I'll have to listen better and see.

Mesas Angus? Never saw that.

His tone changes noticeably on Back in Black and For Those About to Rock as it sounds like he was using more gain/distortion. I'm referring to the Bon Scott days. Albums in question are quot;Let There Be Rockquot; and quot;Poweragequot;. Vintage Angus!!! The thing about this tone that I am referrring to is that he doesn't have it the entire album...nor on the entire solo where I'm hearing it. Crazy stuff...

Yup...mid 80s...there's pics on the net of his rack rig...quad preamps IIRC. Someone posted them here a long while back.

BTW.. got the tunes my friend..thank you soooo much..will give 'em a listen soon (my son is doing homework now, can't be crankin up the Stereo )

Yeah, I've heard that tone. Classic Marshalls. His tone on quot;Back in Blackquot; is also Marshalls but JMP MV models I believe. I don't think he's ever used anything other than Marshalls. Even quot;Highway to Hellquot; has more gain than previous albums. But yeah, I know what you mean. He uses pretty thick strings too and has a heavy right hand.

YES!!! I'm not NUTS!!!

I gotta dial that tone....gas...gaS....gAS...GAS....GGGAAAASSSS FOR A MARSHALL!!

I remember distinctly he did use MESA...BRIEFLY..I think around the time of Who MAde Who? (I'm not sure exactly) and the pics of his rig were here, and I think on HC. He had a nice MESA rack rig, believe it or not...

The real secret to his sound though is not JMPs or 1959s...

he's got an old JTM that is his main recording amp....dime one through the right greenbacks, and you''ll understand....THAT is the classic Angus pre BIB tone...cleaner...fatter...saggy-er

I found the thread. Search 'Angus Young Mesa'. According that thread, he used a Mesa power amp on the Razor's Edge tour but with a Marshall pre-amp and he was still using Marshall cabs with it.

Did it have the pics? cos I'm pretty damn sure he had a MESA preamp...at least in the rack unit..

There's Marshall and MESA preamps in there...

I had one of those Marshall pre-amps BTW

He also used the ada mp-1 with mesa power amps and cabs at the time of the razors edge and live album. I thought his sound at that time was too high gain for him. I will listen to those clips and see if I have any ideas.

The JTM and some obscure 50 watts 1987 is his sound.
But the JTM is classic Angus, live his sound is normally thicker...and I still belive that the rack thing is about pulling peoples legs

What your hearing is a plate reverb. It gives a bright funky hollow sound when set shallow. It is usually most usefull when hidden in a larger gated reverb with a little bit of delay. You often hear it in vocal choruses like on bohemian rhapsody.

If you take that basic reverb and cut all of the high end above 2.5k and feed it into a delay set around 250 milliseconds 3% feedback 5% modulation and then into a bigger gated hall reverb you start getting close to the Van Halen sound on Beautifull Girls. The plate reverb makes it sound like the amp is so close you can touch it and its cranked to 11! But the delay and reverb give it depth and a psuedo stereo effect. It also helps to have an exciter on the delay.

Just buy one of Scott's Edana JTM45 clones. THAT is the Angus sound, period.

Although I have heard he also used an 18 Watter in the studio back in the old days. Gotta plug my fav baby MArshall.

Great info. I was actually wondering how to get that intro tapped harmonic sound. (That's what you mean, right? The intro?)

I was responding to the original thread on the odd hollow sound for the AC/DC solos mentioned? I guess I am not sure what you are reffering too?

I hear it to, strange I'd never noticed that before.
