the other day i went to the music store and tried out one of the new charvels that has teh EVH pickup.
now, im almost positive that there may have been a wiring problem because it sounded like it was either split or in parallel. regardless of that, it sounded great. im gonna go back and try one of the other charvels that has them in it, just to make sure.
from what i can see, it sounds kinda like what i would like. a slightly overwound PAF, great harmonics. it has an A2 magnet right? that's also some really cool, i've never tried an A2 pup before, and this was pretty cool.
now, to my question...
would the 78 be worth the money, or would it be a better idea to go after something like the Demon or the PG to get a tone similiar(overwound PAF)
i would be using this for the stuff i do in church, less distortion and more of a smoother tone. but still be able to cut through in the right situations.
i already have a JB in one guitar, and a DD in my les paul, i guess i would like a less compressed tone, more natural, and less hot, but still having good harmonics(because i feel, with the right equipment, i could have some real cool 80's metal fun with my floyd equipped guitarv )
i know the 78 is quite expensive, but is it really worth all the hype and all that stuff?
hold on a minute!!!!
you play in church??

no you heard it right.
the 78 is a copy of the paf that seymour rewound for you know who back in the day and that is the tone you know who wanted
The APH, Seth, and to a certain extent the PG will get close. They won't be quite as hot as the EVH, but they will get you in the ballpark.
BTW, I too play at my church and the APH/CC combo works out really well for the tones I use there.
well..
if you play in church, then a set of pearly gates would be apropriate

I read on the forums that Seymour rewound a pickup for Ed but I`ve never read anything like that in print. I`ve read in his 5150 guitar he used a 59 that he rewound himself. Would the pickup in question be the Custom Custom?

You should have sat at the breakfast table with Seymour. He told us exactly what happened, in about 2 sentances. The EVH it the real deal.
I thought those ridiculous 3k Charvels had Fender/Charvel PUs in them.
But wait! I thought that it stood for Evenly Voiced Harmonics! Originally Posted by TheGZeusI thought those ridiculous 3k Charvels had Fender/Charvel PUs in them.
says on the page quot;custom-wound EVH pickupquot;. Doesn't specifically say duncan though, anybody know for sure?
I cant imagine paying that much for that guitar though. Hell, im makin my own outta my kramer focus 1000; gonna get a warmoth neck, paint it myself, probably eventually take out the screamin deamon i got in there and put in an EVH. and in the end its gonna cost me about 500, tops.

Please explain , please!
I have had a 78 and to tell the honest truth, It was VERY similar sounding to the CC. Not exactly but, Very close. If I want that sound, I will probally save my money and buy a CC.

It's the exact same pickup he wound for Eddie. The exact same one. Eddie wanted Seymour to make them for his guitars when he went with Musicman. The only problem was he wanted Seymour to make them for him for $8. Seymour was like quot;Man, I can't even get the parts for that pricequot;.
Yup...and apparently there is also some controversary as to whether Ed re-wound his own pups. I won't put any words in Mr. Duncans mouth, but I think Ed does not remember correctly.

Hey Eddie, you're saying the rest of us can afford to pay more for pickups than you?
The quot;EVHquot; Charvels do NOT have the '78 pickup TO MY KNOWLEDGE.
It's the San Dimas anniversary model Charvel that has the '78 pickup in it.
For my money, it's a better guitar than the overly-glossy EVH-branded Charvels.
It's got a better top, a better pickup, and a warmer vintage trem.
