I have a 1 volume 1 tone guitar with two 4 conductor pickups. What wiring option would give me the best clean tone with only 1 push pull pot. I am very confused with the sound differences of parrallel, series, in phase, out of phase, inner coil, outer coil. Can someone please give me advice on how to wire the guitar. I would like my guitar to be wired so that both humbuckers are split and hum canciling when I pull up the push pull pot. What option is this.

Edit: I just deleted this whole post. I just realized that that Benedetto wiring diagram has a mistake in it. I'll draw up the proper thing shortly, and post it.

Here's what you want:
Am I correct in assuming that your diagram is the same as the 2 outer coils diagram in this page?

from : localhost/last question is why would you choose this over Series/Parallel-Neck and Bridge diagram at the bottom right. Also is the wiring that you suggested hum canceling?

The other diagrams that I have looked at for the dual coil taps are slightly different than the one you made. They have the bottom right terminal grounded and the bottom left going to the pickup selector with the top terminals doing nothing. Your diagram has the tops doing this and the bottom ones free. I am just trying to make sure that I do it right.

I modded the diagram to make it more clear. Whether or not you use the top or bottom isn't really important. Its just a matter of whether you want the split mode when the switch is down or up. I tend to orient my drawings with the switch pointing up. So you get the desired function when you quot;pullquot; the knob, and normal, when its down.

So, with the way I have it now, when you pull the knob quot;upquot;, you'll get the stud coil of the bridge, and the adjustable coil of the neck. That way, they'll be humbucking, (when both selected), and you get the best two sounding coils. IMO.

See if that new drawing makes sense.

No prob. Note also, that I accidently left off the tone control. I assume you'll know where to put that.

I just want to point out that this mod will give you the ability to use a split bridge or neck by itself, two cool tones that you may actually like better than the combo for clean, depending on your style.

Thanks. I should probably also mention that the Benedetto wiring isn't necessarily a mistake, per se. Maybe they want to do it that way. Their drawing, however, doesn't allow both pups to on as humbuckers at the same time. I assume they didn't intend that.

I wired it up and it works. Thank you for your help.

Cool. That was quick.

I just put my guitar back together, put new strings on, and adjusted the pickups. This guitar sounds SOOO good. I felt guilty when I put the EMG's in origionaly but I was very curious as to how an 85 and 89 combo would sound. It was very thick sounding but was very one dimentional. The guitar sounded very flat and uninspiring especially when played clean. The s were like a breath of fresh air after being in a stuffy room. The tone of this guitar is so much more complex and 3 dimentional sounding. Now with the coil splits this guitar has a ton of extremely usable tones. I will never put EMGs back in this guitar or any other guitar again. for life.

Thank you Artie for all your help. You saved me hours of research and trial and error. People like you make this the best guitar forum on the internet.
