something really wierds been goin on... i went from metallica to skynyrd reeeeeallllly fast... i wanna see all your strats! tell me some good amps for a good blues/classic rock tone, and pup combos too, my next guitar is gonna be a strat, im thinkin american deluxe... thanks in advance

dont have any pics, but mine isnt much, its just a mim fender strat witha rose wood fretboard and a black replacement hotrial in the bridge im sure you can imagine that. Personally, if i had my pick of strats i'd just pick me up a standard american strat those things are sweet, but so are the american teles.

Look at Hot_Grits' profile pic! Very cool. If it hasn't changed, it's a cool strat with a cool looking green pickguard.

I like Lynard as well lately, And as much as I want a strat to customise, I just have to many other guitars on the list for my age. I was thinking of changeing the pickups of a mexican strat to hotrails and change the pickguard, but I also want a epi les paul custom with invader and full shred.. Good luck with it.

any other reccomendations? doesnt have to be a fender i guess, any other makers?

why not find a Peavey Mace like Skynyrd used? heh, they are loud though

o btw, what DID they use, i saw a thing on tv of them and he was using a really nice fender, so i was guessing fenders

My MIM Strat is so comfortable to me, when I play MIA ones they feel like ****.

hmm i guess ill just go play strats and teles, i like the feel of teles but i dont like only having 2 pups, and i have no idea how do install a 3rd

The Strat U Want

Here is my strat. Warmoth body, neck is off a MIM Powerhouse strat....I have shaved it down to feel a lot like the neck on my Brian Moore.

Custom Custom bridge, Alnico II single coils in the neck and middle. I just have the volume (300K pot) control wired, tones are disconnected. Switch is a Type E Schaler Megaswitch.....gives me a faux tele tone in the middle position. Guitar also has Graphtec saddles.

THis setup lets me go from a nice southern sounding growl to a real classic strat tone to metal tones should i need to.

Really versatile.Here's my Strat. 1994 American Standard. Little '59 bridge, stock middle and neck. Had a LSR nut installed not long after I got it. Also has a quot;neck onquot; switch so I can use bridge-neck pickup combo or all three in the 4 position and the quot;neck onquot; turned on.
...you going for Ed King/Steve Gaines type tones? for the most part Collins was all Gibsons and Gary was too.

As for amps...anything that will do a plexi-type tone will work for most of thier stuff.

I'd go Go for a vintage bridge....the diff in tone is startling between a modern bridge and a vintage style...not just when using the bar either...in the general sense.

If you are gonna buy an AM deluxe spend a bit more and get something like a RI62 or a SIG strat...I had 2 Am. Standards this year...one I had the whole time and was a/b ing against my Malmsteen (long story, I basically rented it from M123 hee hee) , and the YJM totally killed the AM Std for quot;classicquot; strat tone. The AM std had a good piece of resonant wood too.

Something else about Skynyrd. Not only did they use Gibsons back in the hey day, but they used Explorers, Firebirds and Les Pauls. Strats were definitely in the mix though. I've seen live footage of them playing with Collins playing an Explorer, Gaines playing a Strat and Rossington playing an LP (as always).

I saw Skynyrd this summer and they almost exclusively use a variety of Gibsons.

Gary Rossington always has his trusty LP's except for on Freebird he uses an SG for the slide work. Their other guitarist, Ricky Medlocke, who is fantastic BTW, has a zillions Gibby's, LP's, Firebirds, explorers, and he even brought out a blue strat for one song.

When Hughie Thomasson (originally from the Outlaws) was touring with them a few years back he pretty much exclusively stuck to a heavily modded strat, I'm pretty sure it had two buckers, probably tappable.

And he had no problem keeping up with the Gibson boys!

For a quality strat guitar that can cover most blues to classic rock well, then a PAF type Humbucker voiced bridge pup is a good strategy. Both the guitrs posted in this thread are like this. I like a HB in the bridge with SC's in the neck and middle, so I don't have keep changing guitars all night long, although with the right boost, and a tone control put on the strat bridge pickup; the stock single coil strat bridge pickups do okay.

The vintage reissue strats make a very solid foundation to work from. They can be had used for decent prices.

The Eric Clapton strat, is also a very good tool for your stated purpose. It has an onboard mid boost that allows it to get both Fender and Gibson type sounds. I was amazed at how well Eric; using these guitars, sounded on the recent cream reunion CD's. If you dislike the noiseless pickups these come with you can always replace them.

Since you asked about amps, (it's okay in this context isn't it?) you can't go wrong with the classic Fender 5F6 type circut. It will cover everything from BB King, to skynard, to ZZ top and more with aplomb. They can be loud enough, but not too loud, and they usually have good dynamic tone. Amps based on this circut are the Tweed 4-10 bassman, Marshall JTM45/bluesbreaker amps and their various derivatives.

just a thought but you might want to look into a strat with a humbucker in the bridge so you can get mroe versatility out of it, but thats just my opinion.
