Hello all, I was wondering the quality and tone of agathis as a guitar body
wood? as well as what neck woods would compliment it? thanks chris
it's a mahogany wanna-be. Anything that works with mahogany will. Maple necks work on anything really.
is the quality the same agathis = mahogany ? chris
I've heard of agathis referred to as 'poor man's alder'.
i thought it was a kind of pine? used mostly on low end solid bodies.
It's hard to tell because while I've played a number of guitars with agathis bodies, they all had lousy pickups. I've heard it called quot;poor man's mahoganyquot; but I haven't read anything comparing it to alder before. It is indeed within the pine family and grows in south east asian rainforests.
I heard it was in the same family as basswood. I had some in my Squier Standard Fat Strat. I found it to be a little heavier than my alder (or polar...I got to check that out) Fender strat. I also found it to be brighter (neck S-C's because the Squier had a humbucker and my new one don't) but that could be because of the 500k pot.
