What do you guys think the quot;THREEquot; biggest factors of having a good tone are? I mean like amp, wood, technique, pickups, neck scale, strings?
Fingers, Wood, Amp
In that order. Crap in, crap out.
player, amp, guitar
Player,guitar,pickups,amp....
Amp, pickps, guitar (disclaimer: obviously the player has to be competent, but I don't personally buy into the quot;tone is in the fingersquot;. If that's the case, why are we all here and why do the top end guitars sell so well?).
amps. a toss between guitars and pickups.
Fingers, pickups and amp.
Player, amp, pickups.
In tune, player, amp.
IMO, its the whole system you have put together- all factors, amp, guitar- technique. strings and picks don't make all that much difference. Guitar (including the pickups you use) amp, speakers, and fingers.
I mean, give EVH a cheap strat copy,a cheap 10 watt SS amp, and he's still gonna sound like EVH- it may not be all that pleasing to the ear, but he will still sound like EVH

Agreed
I would say... Player (technique), amp, pickups/guitar wood... not in any order. But I also agree that tone is NOT in the fingers.
Player, amp, guitar in that order.
There are so many factors that make an instrument quot;workquot; in the hands of someone who knows how to work that instrument. When I was a kid I always wanted a Rick 4001 because McCartney, Squire, Geddy and Lemmy played 'em. When I got mine (a really cool one), I couldn't get it to sound good for the life of me. I held onto it for 6 years, and it never worked for me. In the years since I've played dozens of them, but I can't coax that tone out of them.
All things being equal, an amp is going to have more impact on a guitar's tone than the guitar, pickups, hardware or anything. A good amp will make a crappy guitar sound decent. A crappy amp will make a good guitar sound like crap.
Pickups, IME, are great for fine tuning an instrument- but the instrument is more important.
knobs, more knobs and bigger knobs
