the other guitarist in my band just bought an empty 4x12 for $125. apparently it was built 10 or so years ago by some fella that makes furniture. it's built to look like a road case, it's got the metal corners and edges, metal grille, and it even has a front panel that pops on and off like a rack. very solid piece of gear, it could definitely take a beating and a half on the road. pretty cool IMO.
but anyways, when we took it apart to load it up with a set of vintage 30's, we discovered that the cabinet was built with what appears to be 9-ply mahogany.
anyone ever hear of a mahogany cabinet? it sounds really good though, it has a lot more punch and more of a pronounced low/low mid range than any other V30 cabinet i've heard. can't wait to hear it after a few loud practice sessions, once those speakers get a little bit of break-in time
only time i've heard of something similar to that is a krank cab, which people pretty much hate. But theres aren't ply, they're solid wood
but if it works, hell, rock it till it dies
the Krank cabs are made of Poplar.
mahagony seems like it would be great for a cab. might just wiegh a bit.
