This'll be the first time I change pickups in my best axe I'm changing from whatever the stock 'bucker is to a JB...
I can't wait to hear the results! I'm hoping it'll take me on step closer to gettig a tone near to to Adrian Smith's... i.e halfway decent
Great choice!!!!! The JB is awesome! I think you will be VERY happy with the results.
but it might not bring you too close to adrians. he's using dimarzio PAFs in his guitars.

I never know what pickups Adrian uses/has used, I've heard all sorts, from JB's to DiMarzio Super Distortions like on his Destroyer to EMGs (back in the day when he used LADOs) to the stock humbucker that was on his guitar when he bought it...(I bought up a topic about this a while back, Fender DH1/DH8 humbuckers or something, anyway they're not available to buy seperately..)
Anyways the rest of Iron Maiden use so it's a fair compromise I think

that's a link to a file download of me messing up Adrian's solos on A Quarter To Heaven I recorded a few minutes ago, so I can see what my tone was like before I get the JB (I've only been playing just under two years)...
You'll love the JB, I think. Just be sure to play with the pickup height a bit to get it where it sounds best (follow SD's recommendations for a starting point). The JB can sound extraordinary or it can sound like dung. When you find that sweet spot, you'll be ready to rock. Enjoy.
early days adrian - stock les paul gold top
ibanez destroyers with dimarzio super distortion and PAF in the neck
dean star with a super distorionoh and a SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET sounding gibson ( think it was a gibson, have to check the video) double cut LP guitar .. dont know what pups. used on flight of icarus =) .. just a note. as a whole i think Piece of Mind is my favourite album tone-vise
SIT - powerslave, 7th son era - Jackson strat with jackson pups (no idea which ones) on board mid boost, LADO Earth with lado custom pickups (they werent EMG's) ..
after that various gibson guitars, fenders, jackson strats ETC.. all sorts of pups
BNW to present - Stock Gibson Black beauty (used on Wickerman) the rest are Dimarzio PAF equipped fender strats. on the last tour, he also used a gibby SG, but what pups, is unknown to mehe of course has a sh!tload of other guitars, but these are his main guitars throughout the years

Dude where'd you find out that he uses DiMarzio PAFs these days?
Lead-wise my fave Adrian tone is undoubtedly his tone in Psycho Motel throughout Welcome To The World, but in Maiden it has to be either Powerslave or S.I.T or Dance Of Death. Since Psycho Motel his lead tone has had a more vocal, kinda 'quacky' quality to it, whateer pickup he uses (PAF's if you're right) really retains the guitar's tone
Rhythm-tonewise, it's either POM or Powerslave for me
So they weren't EMG's in his LADO, eh? Good :P I'm no EMG fan...
I'm pretty sure it's a Gibson DC he uses on Flight Of Icarus. I know H used his ol' Goldtop on Blood Brothers on BNW and a white flying V on a track on Dance Of Death.
I might have to get a DiMarzio PAF in my bridge of my strat instead (other than the pickups and string gauge I use it's the same specs as his I think) if you're right, you know. Oh, I can't look
Pickups are now the bane of my life at the moment!
Teh JB rules!!!!!!!!!!!
Adrians' old main copper/goldtop was a Deluxe he retro'ed with a DiMarzio SuperD for the bridge..had the mini HB still in the neck. I've also seen him with another G/C top that had 2 buckers...couldn't read the truss rod cover to tell if he finally replaced the neck mini or it was a different guitar altogether.
As far as I'm concerned once he went to Strats (jacksons, whatever), it was all over for his tone..too much frequency overlap with Dave.
And don't get me started on that other dude in the band who replaced him

In my opinion Adrian's tone improved somewhat when he got into Fender Strats particularly for the more hard-rock/melodic orientated stuff he did outside of Maiden
And Janick? Well, I prefer his lead tone to Dave Murrays Davey's is too smooth these days. Back in the day it had balls, nowdays it just glides everywhere like it's aquaplaning or something.

i dont know what he used on those records, sorry (talkin bout psycho motel) but SIT it's the jackson with jackson pups (possibly wound by abigal ybarra .. which is the jackson/fender equivalent of MJ)

no.. not all plastic covered pups are EMG's

yar! the DC.. forgot about the name of the model =)

it's a standard american HSS floyd strat. strings are deam markley hybrids 9 to 46 i think .. but i always mix them strings up =P

I read in one interview he has a DiMarzio Super Distortion in one of his plethora of sunburst strats. He used one of them on his second Psycho Motel record, on a song called Rain, I think it was the DiMarzio PAF Pro'd one.Originally Posted by Davey
