I scored a free unfinished Mightymite strat neck yesterday and I was wondering about how I could get that slick oil feel of the Ernie Ball guitars. What will I have to do to make it like the EBs.
The other question is what tuners can I use? i measured the whole being 13/32th of an inch across. They seem pretty big, can anyone answer my questions?
Warmoth will have the specs for tuner reams somewhere in their neck info.
EBs are finished with gun oil and wax. I don't know what finish you have now, but if it's a glossy finish, you're going to get rid of a little of the finish, probably with light sandpaper or steel wool, but I'm going to have to leave the details up to the finishing experts
EBs do have a very nice playing finish
Bump
I have this size hole on the back, but this one is smaller on the face side of the neck, would a grover tuner be able to fit in my strat tunerhole ok? Mine is a 13/32th.
Curly, my neck is unfinished like a posted before. Anyone know how EB does it?

It is accually gun stock wax and oil (lemon, orange, non-petroleum based).
from what I've read on their site, EB dips their necks in a vat of gun stock oil ...
here's some infor from their site:
Q: How do I maintain the neck on my new Music Man guitar?
A: Since the neck is unfinished, it is more susceptible to humidity changes. An occasional dose of gunstock oil will help to keep the neck maintained; we use and recommend Birchwood-Casey Tru-oil, but any good quality gunstock oil will work.Clean the neck first. Use a small amount of Tru-oil, leave it on for 5 minutes, then wipe it off with a paper towel. After that, apply Birchwood-Casey Tru-Wax. Be sure to douse the paper towel with water before disposing of it! Read the wax and oil manufacturer's instructions regarding disposal of these used paper towels.
Birchwood-Casey products are available at most sporting goods or gun stores. Their web address is from : localhost/fingerboards should not be treated with the gunstock oil; instead they should be treated with a high grade of lemon oil.
For cleaning, try using the same high grade of lemon oil to clean the entire neck, both maple and rosewood fretboards. If the neck is very dirty, you can use a small amount of Murphy's Oil Soap, diluted 3:1 to clean it. Keep in mind that if the dirt has gotten into the wood, it cannot be removed except by sanding it down, which we do not recommend. It is better to keep it clean in the first place. Washing your hands first helps!
On an unfinished neck, some discoloration after many hours of playing is normal. A good place to buy the Tru Oil and gun stockwax is at Bass Pro Shop
