now please do a JB in the bridge with open coils compared to one with an SD nickel pickup cover.. ha ha.. I've always wondered if it makes a difference
ok wow...now thats cool science.
Maybe I missed something somewhere, but I have no idea what that all means...
Could someone do an analysis please?
You are looking at the intensity and direction of the magnetic field, the first are cross sections and you will note that the baseplate and U bring the field down closer and wider (ie wider range of harmonics, possibly warmer sound) while the cheep ceramic is very tall and thin (small range of harmonics, probalby thin sound)
What is a Dualtone II pickup? Is it magnetic rods in one coil and regular screws plus bar magnet in the other?
Looked like the baseplate brought the magnetic strength up in the middle string regions-- about .015 w/o and about 0.2 w/baseplate. Although the peaks and edges looked about the same.
That's pretty cool stuff. Thanks.
Those S90's look really interesting -- anybody know what the specs are on 'em, magnet, DC resistance, etc.?
from : localhost/the first pickup on the page.
I love that page.
which one represents a mini-humbucker.
I am having a little problem telling magnets from iron plate.
in the A5/A2 hum diagrams, the rods are magnets and the bottom is a iron plate. right?
and in the P90 diagram, what is the magnets? the two pieces on the bottom or the rod with screw cap?

You can also see that the field strength doesn't change dramatically over small distances so all those guys who get all upset because their pole pieces aren't exactly11/64quot; away from the string can get a life and start worrying about important things...
Excellent resource, thanks for the link.

Though conversely, the field strength doesn´t change massively more between an A2 and an A5... but we can all agree that there´s a difference....
Numbers and graphs can be used to prove anything, depending on how you interpret them

The difference doesn't have to be by a factor of 2 or more to make a difference in sound and output. In other words, it's not as if Alnico 5 sounds twice as loud as 2 -- if that were the case, no-one would ever bother with Alnico 2 because it's too weak or with 5 because it's too strong.
To my ear, there's somewhere around an 5% to 10% increase in output from A2 to A5 -- but that's a very noticeable difference.
It's like the folks who say there's only a 2% difference in the DNA from a chimp to a man (presumably even less between man and woman)...but what a difference that 2% makes, huh?
