you would probably need a good amp with lots of low end. I tend to turn the tone pot down on any emg pickup because they sound 'shrill' otherwise (the 60 and 85 not so much as the 81)

Yup. It's a bit brighter than with a tone control, but nothing major.

A better effect would be to direct mount the EMG pickup if you can- place a couble of dowels or shims under the pickup and screw the pickup directly into the body- it's good if you have an alder, poplar, or hard tonewood, not good for softer basswood. The bottom of the EMG pickup really picks up the vibrations from the body if it's done right, giving it a much bigger tone. Don't know if it really works with passives, but those EMG's really pick up the vibrations.

i played a guitar like that, it was a freddy krueger jackson into a marshall jcm800 it was complete 80's and wasnt to bad, no versatility but if brightness is your thing go for it

My bronze BC rich only has the 81 and a volume pot. It wouldn't even need a volume pot, haha.The pickup sounds good, you dont have to fool with knobs to nail it.

yeah it has been said that a direct mount pup will have a stronger tone
it does not matter if it is passive or active
