Would this pickup combination work well?

neck: SH-1N '59 model
middle: Hot stack
bridge: Dimarzio Evolution

guitar: Tom Anderson Drop Top-basswood with a quilted maple top, maple neck with a rosewood fretboard, floyd rose bridge, H-S-H.

Thanks for the advice...

I would imagine that the super powerful evolution would overpower the living crap out of the 59 neck....

The evo neck itself, it seems a good deal more powerful than a 59 bridge...

So you will probably have a serious imbalance there, but I'll wait for others to chime in before saying with serious conviction...

sure it would. set it about 5/32 away from the strings when string is depressed at the 12th fret. The '59 sounds great when it's that close. I'll tell you another excellent , excellent neck pickup is the Air Norton. It was designed for John Petrucci and it is really clean and articulate. It's also hot...but in a VERY good way. Do you ever notice how neck pickups in an overdrive setting tend to struggle? Not this one...notes SLICE right through the mix. Depends on what you want. Do you want Black Crowes quot;Remedyquot; jangly and open? Use the '59. The Air Norton is my very favorite neck p'up ever. Nice and focused but still open and not at all quot;spankyquot; like most hot pups in the neck position. It will probably balance better with Evolution than '59 but the '59 will be fine...especially if you get it nice and close. I took out all of my tone caps and run my 2 Aero Instrument pickups wide open with only a 1meg volume pot and I love it that way. I have a 2001 Heritage H-150cm(a REAL Les Paul).

I can second the Air Norton endorsement, it's a great neck pickup that remains clear and strong no matter how much distortion you throw at it.

Thanks for all of the advice, however would there be another pickup that you would recommend to work well in the neck position with an Evolution in the bridge. I am interested in having a Duncan in the neck. Thanks again.

Not to get off topic, but this isn't true. Petrucci uses tweaked versions of the Steve's Special amp; Air Norton in his guitars.

The jury is out whether or not the dimarzio's made for EBMM guitars are actually tweaked.....but regardless, prior to Petrucci moving to Ernie Ball, he used production Air Norton's in his Ibanez signature model. That's cold hard fact...

Very true,Strangegrey. I spoke to DiMarzio about that. The quot;tweakquot; in Petrucci's is that the coils are swapped....allowing the split to be towards the bridge instead of the neck. DiMarzio says to flip the pup around if you want the same effect...but they're identical otherwise.

Yeah, so that means when in regular humbucker mode, the difference wouldn't be noticable at all....

Dude, if you wanna sound like 2 different guitars (which some of my buddies love). I like a good blend. If you got the EVO then you gotta get a Air Norton or Virtual PAF neck, I think it's sweeter and a much better match. Also consider the PAF PRO for more bite or the PAF model from Dimarzio, they are nicely voiced, and in the same vein as the 59.
