before i got my SG i never had a guitar with a nitro finish, or any finish where you could really notice a nasty buildup of any crap. i always used to just wipe my guitars off with a damp or dry cloth and that would do it for me.

but my SG gets real dirty real fast, especially on the back of the neck. right now i'm using that Dr. Duck's axwax/string lube, and i absolutely hate it. it's too oily, and it doesn't ever work very good for giving my guitar a good shine.

i need something that will clean my guitar well, but more importantly something that will leave the back of the neck good and clean and smooth without leaving my hands all oily and nasty.

what do you guys use?

Virtuoso cleaner and polish, good stuff.

I use the Fender/Macguire products...Best stuff I've ever used! I also like the Virtuoso Polish...Nothing but the best on all of my guitars...

Dust and smoke from the air in my room, sweat from my hands...

Nah every restring I whipe down my guitars with a bandana or something until the finish looks good and take a toothbrush to get the crap off the frets or wherever...

Clean???? Why, that rubs off the mojo!!!! LOL...

Is the Meguiar's stuff safe for nitro? I'm assuming it is, but assuming usually = bad with me

EDIT: Nevermind, upon actually reading for myself (imagine that) I found what I needed to know...

I usually just lick mine 'til it's clean

hmmm, Interesting approach.im sure some folks don't even clean their guitars..

Well some fine cloth does the deal.. usually once a day after playing or sometimes once a week...

Dunlop 65 (on nitro finishes Martin Polish) and a soft microfibre cloth.

i just scrub it down with some bleach, hose it off and hang it up to dry

I use Gibson polish on anything with nitro and Dunlop 65 on everything else.

I've had this bottle of martin guitar polish and a gibson polish cloth I've had for like 4 years now. The stuff never seems to run out. That's what I use.

I work closley with Mirabella Guitars and restoration. This facility does a lot of work on vintage Strats and Les Pauls as well as D'Angelicos and D'Aquistos. The best product I have ever used for cleaning 30 years of grime off a guitar is 3M prep team polish. Unfortunatley it is no longer made, but a good alternative is 3M cleanr wax.

]I've been dying to try this stuff. Up till now I've used the methods that Dan Erelwine suggests, and then finish it off with Martin's polish. Seems to work fairly well. The Fender/Macquire kitt looks promising.

Mer car polish (as recommended by my tec). It has no silcone in it so there is no stick build up.

And its safe to use on nitro finishes
