I've been looking for a practice amp/take to small jams and I've been browsing musiciansfriend for a new one and checking out the ones with sound clips.
I gave a listen to the...
The Crate FXT30, the Marshall MG30DFX, and Vox Valvetronix AD30VT. They didnt sound tube persay but they sounded cool. I also was listening to the guy from JFROCK.com he sounded cool with a Solid State amp too. I guess it proves that anything can sound cool with enough work and patiences. Wish I would have figured this out sooner maybe I wouldnt have wasted so much money. Oh well you live and learn (then get loves... haha im funny).
I'm thinking about picking up the Vox AD30 can anyone comment on these? I might throw a new speaker in it for the hell of it. How is the quality? Most important sound? I'm looking for a Medium Gain 80's metal tone. Maiden-esq but at low levels for my bedroom.
Thanks!

Dude, get a Laney LC 15 Mark 2. 15 whats or pure tube, andyou can crank it right up without annoying the neighbours.
All I can tell you is stay away from any sort of marshall combo/practice amp that isn't tube, and crate. The vox is a good choice as well as possibly a roland cube or a laney practice amp. If you are looking for a practice amp that can handle loudish volumes and is hybrid, look at Hughes and Kettner Attax combo's on ebay, they're cheap and good. Celestion Rockdrivers come stock on em.
All of the amplifiers you listed are voiced differently. The most important factor in looking to buy a practice amp is which sound appeals to you. Bring your guitar out to Guitar Center and just try everything. If you aren't real content with one, wait. You shouldn't buy one because you need it, but because you're floored by it. I've learned this by experience.
We can give you some suggestions to look at if you describe the music you play and the tone you're after (are you more high-gain oriented, crunch driven, or mainly play clean? etc.)
Cheers-

That is way to much power for me in this application. When the neighbours are more or less in the next room that would be too loud. But thank you for the suggestion.Originally Posted by SeraphimTNAll I can tell you is stay away from any sort of marshall combo/practice amp that isn't tube, and crate. Once again I dont need loudness I will check out Hughes and Ketter, thats one company I didnt think about. I disagree with you oppinion on the marshall that isnt tube. Those old Lead 12's were pretty cool. There was one crate I played on that I liked... it would have made a good practice/backup amp.
Personally I liked the vox. Any advatages in quality/sound moving up a model? besides power and speaker size? power is not really a factor for me. if i dont like the speaker i can always rig it to hook up to my cab, but you cant pollish a terd so if the sound isnt there to start with there is no need to try and improve it. As anyone used one of those vox's and can comment about them?
