Hi, which is best out of these 2 amps in your opinions?
The Peavey 5150 combo and the Marshall JCM900 mk3 2501 combo
and why?
I play mostly metal by the way
quot;Bestquot; is a very subjective term... modern metal guys would probably pick the 5150, but this crazy little metal band from England got some good tones out of the two mixed together. (50 points if you guess who )
iron maiden?
which JCM 900...there were several models and they are all different.
I'd say 5150. But I've only played one jcm900 and I didn't care for it.
God******; tone is NOT in your fingers!

I forget some of the numbers...the MK III is the SL-X right?
What band? Oh and i agree with dead skin slayer, skill is in the fingers, not tone! Theres two factors to something sounding good, tone and the actual playing. If you have good tone but your missing notes and not keeping rythem of course its gonna suck, but thats not called tone. Your fingers might have about a 5% effect on overall tone, changing your amp will have a over 40% effect. Just my opinion
Whoever brought the finger crap in here....... i nod my head in disgust.
I think you will fare better with the 5150, marshalls are great for rock and metal, but the 5150=metal. There is a reason you dont see many people using the 900s.

Nope, the MkIII is pre-SL-X. The SL-X is also known as the MkIV Master Volume.
I used to own a 5150 head and now own a MkIII 2100 head. I've also played both combos. IMO, the Marshall wins hands down.
Sure, the 5150 has a decent clean and is dual channel where as the Marshall is one with two switchable master volumes, but the 5150's high gain just sounds buzzy. I did not like the tones I was getting out of it. The head was great, the combo....eh. Now, that Marshall 2501 combo, it's the same chasis, same circuitry as the 2500 head. The faceplate's letters/numbers are printed the other way around and the chasis is mounted in a combo enclosure.
Those MkIII's do metal with ease. Want some more gain (like they need it), just push the front end with an overdrive or boost pedal like the SFX-01. See my sig for some MkIII clips. One of them is a Judas Priest tune.
The reason you don't see a lot of people playing the JCM900 MkIII is because there's not a lot of them out there, and many write off the JCM900's at first glance (thanks to the Dual Reverbs and switch to 5881's). The MkIII's were made for 2 years where the 5150 was made for over 10. 5150's are a lot easier to come by.
I love my 5150 head.... it is the easiest way to get that huge metal sound most players want... plus if you play with the controlls it really shines as a Classic rock amp as well.... Just cut the distortion back and it sounds great! the best part of the 5150 is the huge low end thump it lets loose!
It has been a long time since i have played thru a 900 head... I only have a modded old 800 head in my collection... 5150 beats the 800 head i have for metal tones..... I do remember the 900's being nice and fuzzy.... a few players i have heard say they wish they never sold their 900 heads as they miss them. I find it strange that you never see many 900 heads up for sale in my area... either they didn't sell or people have hung onto them.... A great Canadian Musician by the name of Kim Mitchell, said he used a 900 stack on one of his albums and he is still searching for that tone again... it was a American Standard Strat and a 900 stack.... he claims it was amazing!
i'm gonna say...it depends on whether you play lead or rythm
IMO the 5150 only sounds good with ALL the mids taken out of it, i'm just not a fan of the mids on that amp at all, but it does the scooped thing better than any amp i've ever heard. But change out the stock speakers. Anyhoo, i can see this as a great rythm amp for metal, but for lead i can see it leaving something to be desired
900 would be better for lead, assuming you use hot pickups amp; boost the crap out of it
Holy crap Drew; you are always wrong.
This amp does scoop better than nearly all, but the lead tone is to die for when recorded properly.
I'd say the jcm 900 because it can do the marshall tone with lots of distortion. The scooped sound work sounds pretty nice on my jcm 900.

Dig out some of VHoholics clips with the 5150 combo with greenbacks...that is some of the most cool rocktones I ever have heard.

Booyah!
I don't know...while some things change with different equipment...the older I get the more I realize the same basic tone I have is there regardless of amp/guitar. The differences are slight. I think it's more in how we hear ourselves while playing that drives us to constantly experiment with gear. As an example. I pulled out the Jackson the other night, and made a couple quick clips...it didn't sound THAT much different than my Paula clips...but to me while I'm playing the difference is huge.
That said...If ya get a good 900 like the MKIII Erik spoke of , I'd go that way....I've also heard some good clips of a SL-X when it was rebiased for El34s.
