Hey there, just ordered some P90 Hots to put in my Epiphone G-400 Deluxe, and now I am wondering what kind of routing or aditional work I'm going to need to do to fit these in the humbucker cavities. Anyone know?

Hmm, you're gonna have to chop out a bit of wood I'm afraid - p90s are longer and thinner than humbuckers, so you'll also have some exposed wood from the humbucker cavity. You're better getting a set of phat cats which will slot in there nicely.

If you're lucky, the Dog-ear pickup cover for the P-90s will juuuuuust cover the hole you're gonna have. If you're using dog-ear pick-up covers, that is.

Oh, wait, the G-400 is like an SG. Never mind. You are making a new pickguard, right?

I'd feel uncomfortable taking any wood away from a Gibson style axe. I would recommend you sending back the P-90's and getting some custom wound Phat Cats. That way, if you don't like the P-90 sound, you can always go back to real humbuckers.

Actually, the pick guard doesn't even surround the pickups. I thought about a Phat Cat, but I read alot of reviews and it sounds like the P90 Hot is exactly what I need. I'm not overtly worried about cosmetics, so I think I'll be fine. Eventually maybe I'll try and fabricate some sort of special ring for it. Thanks for the help. As far as switching back to Humbuckers... well I'm only putting the P90 in the neck, so I'll still have a bucker in the bridge.

So did you get dogears? A regular P-90 will not attach to a dogear cover.

The Phat Cat fits the HB cavity. Kent Armstrongt also makes P-90s tht are retrofitted to fit in an HB cavity. www.kentarmstrong.com

It's not cosmetics I'm worried about. There's just not a lot of wood around a SG's neck joint,which makes routing in that area kind of scary to me.

If you are intent on doing it, be careful.

Oh I don't intend to do it myself. I could do the wiring no problem, but I'm no woodworker. I'm going to take it to the shop that I bought it. If they screw it up they'll fix it or replace it.
