I've been thinking about getting a Marshall JMP-1 for a while now. But I'm not sure about one thing. Can you use it with a Marshall head like a SLP or JCM800 and then into a cab? Or does it have to be used with a power amp? (I know the Marshall 9200 works with it). Thanks.
you could use it straight into the in jack but it could sound bad as you are stacking 2 preamps on top of each other. then again it might not.
if those two heads have a fx loop i have seen it done this way.
guitar- input of the jmp-1- fx return on the head- speakers.
hope this helps,
edm
You would be much better off mating the JMP-1 with a 2 channel tube power amp like a Mesa 2:90, 2:100, 50/50, 295, or the Marshall (gold) power amps that the unit was designed for.
To plug into a guitar amp, you'd have to plug it into the FX return. You'd be sacrificing the stereo sound, because you'd be in mono. Sometimes, preamps don't always sound right, going into another amp, since that amp was designed around it's preamp section.
It sounds fine to do it, if it's your only option, but eventually you'd be better off with a good power amp and either 2 cabs or 1 stereo cab.
Thanks both of you for your help. I think I'll go for a Marshall power amp, preferably a 9200 because I've heard they are excellent. I'll have to get one used though as they aren't made any more I believe. Anyway thanks guys.
I'm running my JMP-1 into a 2nd generation VS 120/120 Pro SS power amp (the successor to the gold 8008). The JMP-1 is very noisy on higher gain settings and I'd recommend using a Rocktron HUSH unit with it. And you'll be better off using the 9200 with it and a good cab.
I will say this...in my quot;Rack daysquot; I ran an ADA MP-1 and a Marshall JMP-1 both with a 9200...killer set up, plain and simple the JMP-1/9200 is great for high gain tones, the cleans are good...keep in mind that these are NOT classic Marshall tones, but good tones either way.
JCC... why style of music do you play and why are you wanting the JMP-1 for? Also what gear do you currently have?
Maybe someone can chime in and recomend somthing for what you are trying to dol.

Well I know that at the moment some of the guitarists, if not all of them, from Iron Maiden use a JMP-1 and 9200, so they are obviously good amps. I have heard from two friends of mine. One has a JMP-1 with some other Marshall power amp (can't remember what), and he said that it's great. The other has a Marshall 1959SLP head and a Marshall cab and he also says that that is awesome. So I was wondering if I could use the JMP-1 and 1959SLP (or some other Marshall head) together or if a power amp was needed.
I play mostly heavy metal and I have a Fender Strat, with SD hot rails in neck/bridge if that makes a difference.

All right man cool. I'll try and get a 9200 then. Is ebay the only place to get them? Or do you know anywhere else? Cheers.
