Has anybody tried or heard of taking 2 P90s and wiring them together out of phase (ala a HB)? Obviously it will probably need some body work to accomodate 2 P90s in one pup cavity, so I am thinking of doing this in a clone - either LP or SG type body.
I am also thinking about adding a coil tap to split 'em.
What do you think the resulting tone / output would be?
Your (kind) thoughts and opinions would be appreciated...
Not entirely sure how to answer this one-
The coils of a humbucker are in series-I happen to like the sound of p90s in series, but that's with a bridge and neck position-
If you are litterally talking about mounting 2 soapbars adjacent to each other and running them in series, my immediate thought is you might get a strong but muddy or thin sound. Here's my thinking...
P90s are bright beacuse they are thin-- Humbuckers consist of 2 coils that are physically as close as you can get them to each other and they have plenty of output because they are 2 coils in series. But the lenght of the string that the 2 humb coils 'see' is longer than the amount of string that a single coil sees and the harmonics along that section of string get munged together and phase canelation between the 2 coils gives the humbucker a less bright sound.
Now consider the distance of the 2 p90 coils from each other if you mount them next to each other in their normal covers. The disctance from one coil to another will be considrably more than from one humb coil to another and I think there is a really good chance that you would have so many harmonics covered that you would get a really muddy or thin sound when they start phase canceling-
Also wonder if the magnets would be close enought to 'fight' each other.
But it's an intersting idea and I would suggest an experiment if you are serious. Build a wooden jig that looks like a little table that would stradle the guitar you want to mod with legs when it is laying down. Make the legs just long enough to put the table the same height above the strings as the body is under the strings-
Mount your p90s on the bottom of the table facing the strings and you could move them around and experiment with distances to see if you could find any distances that sound good and if you do, then you could route the guitar to those deminisions-
make sense?
