Hello all.
I saw that Stewmac was selling the tape for shielding guitars, i want to get some but how much does one need to do a strat?
This just seems like about the easiest cleanest way to shield a guitar.
Other suggestions are of course gladly accepted!
Thanks!
I found this site helpful in shielding my Parts-o-caster:
Guitar Nuts Quieting the Beast Link
I got a 2 sizes 2quot; and 4quot; wide seld adhesive copper foil about 4 feet long from someone on eBay. I got a copper pickguard shield also but had to use spray adhesive to sick it to the pickguard.
That website Bert posted is perfect. If you're going to order it online anyway, go to Warmoth, as they tell you how much you'll need (roughly) on their site.
from : localhost/if you're set on StewMac you can just take that amount and order it from anywhere, or go to a local shop.
quot;A body with a top control cavity (read: Strat) should easily be covered with 6 linear inches of the 8 inch materialquot;
So... 6quot; x 8quot; = 48 square inches
So you'd need roughly 48 square inches for a strat style guitar, but I'd get a bit extra in case you mess up, or you may just need more.
thanks guys!
i am surely not set on stew mac just the first that i found
i will keep looking and reading!
Well I went anal about it and used both shielding paint and copper tape. Certainly over kill and unnecessary but I had time and absolutely never wanted to remove the pickguard ever again period let alone for a shielding/noise problem.
They are all mouse quiet so I guess it was worth it.
Copper tape will do the job but I use graphite paint as there is less risk of it coming loose and you can get it into every little crevice.
Have any of you used the foil backed duct sealing tape? Your basic Home Depot type stores will have it and they appear to have a pretty aggressive adhesive on them.
Order an aluminum pickguard shield from , no need to shield the cavity's with anything. Makes your guitar quiet as a mouse for $12. Fits under ANY pickguard, takes about 5 minutes to install.
I have it on both of my strats....no noise. My Hwy 1 strat is not even RW/RP, and it's dead quiet.
Just putting a sheild on a pickguard will not sheild the guitar!!! It really needs to be sheilded from all directions for optimal performance. I usually use the Adhesive backed copper tape in the cavitys and I use a really wide peice of it to sheild the pickguard.
Here is one I did for one of our fellow forum brothers,
Notice the tabs that come out of the cavity? Those connect the sheild of the pickguard to the sheilding in the body so all stray noises going to ground!
My strat with the aluminum pickguard is quiet as a mouse fart, but YMMV.

Maybe its better than it was but, I bet you it could be better!
yeah that aluminum tape is what i was looking at
where are you getting yours?
it seems like a relativly cheap easy upgrade.
I've used tape and conductive paint, and for my money, paint is a much, much better way to go. It was hard to get the tape on correctly without it wrinkling or getting stuck to something else. The paint takes several coats, but after it dries it's perfect. You can use cheap acid brushes to paint it on. Much easier to work with.
