You have budget of $700.
Would you go with a used EPI Elitist DOT/Sheraton/Lucille, a used Gibby ES-137 or get a new EPI DOT/Sheraton/Lucille and save more $$?
For about $100 more you could find a really nice used Hamer Artist Mahogany or Artist Korina. That's the way I would go, but that's just me.
Used Elitest DOT if you can find one. Great guitars.

^^ That sounds good, or get the used Gibson. All the Gibson ES series guitars that I've played I've liked a lot.
I love my ES-137 Classic in Blue Burst with a set of Seth Lovers -- melds a semi-hollow tone at neck and middle with a LP-style tone at the bridge. Great sustain and whoomphffff.
Nothing less than a real 335/355 will do for me. So I guess I'm no help...
(shameless plug alert)
You could buy my ESP PC-2! Seriously kicks the butt of the Epi dots...waaaaay more solid feeling amp; sounding. Even if you don't dig EMG's you could drop some Phat Cats or Seth Lovers in there.

One thing to keep in mind with the under $1000 guitars is that you'll probably want to replace the stock pickups with something that has tone. Like those Washburn 335 knock-offs...great guitars but the pickups suck IMO.

Yeah if I went with an EPI I was going to use the savings and plunk some Seth's in there.
The Hamer is an interesting option. Guys on this board LOVE their guitars.
I also noticed that MF dropped the prices of the Elitist LP's to $699. Maybe they will follow suit with the DOTS.
I would wait for a good clean USED Es-135...those are bad ass guitars...I will have one!

I had an Ibanez AS-100 and it was a really professional 335 style guitar.
Bought it used for about 1/2 to 2/3 the price of 335 and liked it better
than the 335's I tried. I put a Seth Lover and JB in it, series / parallel
on the JB in a push / pull pot and it sounded great.
Traded it in for a new Schecter Jazz-7. Its pretty heavy and
gigantic for a thin-semi-hollow. It comes with duncan designed
pickups (Jazz and JB), coil cutters on both pups and by golly, an
extra string. Very nice for ersats fender VI licks if you make forays
into rockabilly. You probably can find it on ebay for 400$ or so.

I agree, and I do have one.
Look at the Epi Elite Sheratons. I know it isn't a Gibson or a Hamer, but the one I played had tons of mojo.
No need to swap the pickups either, those stock mini 'buckers romp.

I was reading Harmony Central and most of the people weren't giving the ES-135 stellar reviews. Lots of compaints about the quality of wood and the finish. I'd love to hear one, with P90's.
Also you could probably swing a used Gibson ES-333. Those are pretty coll guitars.
Get the new Schecter Cosair hollow bodies. THey are awesome
Save some more money and get a 335!

I want one of those so bad!
of course you can't go wrong with a 335 but if you can play one check out the Washburn hb-35...very nice for the money, especially used.
