Hey,
was wondering if any of you guys can help me out. I have a problem with humbuckers and metal covers. I tried out a SD 59 and SD JB set for my second guitar, which is an old Ibanez Les Paul Custom. The guitar sounded great. Then I tried some old Gibson T-Tops on it and got a weird result. These pickups came from an old Gibson Les Paul Custom and sounded great on it. But when putting them on my Ibanez they started giving me weird hi noises - kinda like microscopic feedback when picking a note. Now the pickups tend amplify every move I make - even when someone speaks in rehersal room - ei gets amplifeid. When using gain from my Soldano - I get instant really awful feedback. Just what could I have done wrong by intsalling the pickups?

And the weird thing is - I bought the golden metal covers for the set and put them on my Gibson Les Paul Standard - and got the same result. Everything amplified, massive undesired feedback, weird noises. Damn, I get the feedback even when the drummer hits hi-hat to start the song - 1,2,3,4 and I'm allready buzzing with my guitar.

If anyone has experience with this kind of behaviour or could give me some advice what I could be doing wrong or should be noticing - I'd really appriciate it.

Thank you!

Kid

Oh, forgot to mention that the T'tops also had the metal covers on them.

I want to make sure I'm understanding you. You're having problems with the T-tops?

Are you using a lot of gain in your amp?

Welcome to the forum, BTW.

Thanks, I'm new here but have found some quite good information here. Great to be here, thanks!

As to the problem - I did have the problem with my Gibson T-Tops that originally had metal covers after I put them on my second guitar. But also got the same problem when adding a new set of metal covers to the 59 and Jeff Beck humbuckers when placing them on my main axe (so that the look would be the same as it was with the T'tops). Can't stand it - now I have two guitars that I can hardly use.
As to gain - no I don't use that much overdrive (preamp volume on Soldano Super Lead near 3) and the problem appears even when using no gain at all. The pickups have become quot;oversensitivequot; or something - amplifieng every sound and move in the room, giving nasty feedback all the time and distorting kind of every note picled (microscopic really high noise to every note).

If anyone knows what could be causing this or how to fix it - any information would be great. Thanks you!

Welcome to the forum kid.
Are you having the same problem on more than one guitar but with the same covers on different pickups or do you have the problem on different pickups with different covers and different guitars? This may help us to isolate the problem area.

I'm thinking this is a wax potting problem. I can't say conclusively, but it sounds like it to me. Many people fill the empty space between the cover and the pup to further eliminate microphonics. Not all pups and covers have much of a need for it. It's not a guaranteed fix, but it's a possibility. Maybe someone else who has more experience (I've never owned/used covers) will chime in about it.

Are your covers soldered on?

If you just slipped the covers on and did not solder them on this could cause the feed back you are talking about.

take the covers off. That's probably the problem.

Thanks everyone.
Kevin@BlackRose - The covers have been soldered
Amateur - different covers, different guitars, different pickups with one set having the covers originally alreaday on them - meaning I did not add the covers but only took off the pickups from one guitar and put them on the other one and got the problem - on the original guitar that I took them from I did not have the problem.
And got the some problem with other pickups that I placed the covers on myself.

Thanks anyway everyone and I'll try to go to some guitar electronics expert and see if he can fix the damn problem

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds to me like you need to wax pot your pups, or have someone do it for you. I ran into this problem with my dbl bucker strat when I put covers on it.

Luke

I think you either have to wax pot your pickups or take the covers off. Somehow you you'd make microphones out of your pickups. It may not be a bad idea to double check your wiring though.
