Hey guys. I really need to get into some Jazz. Can you guys give me some of the bigger names in jazz (guitar)? I know of John Scofield and Joe Pess, but that's it. I just need the Satriani's, Vai's and Hendrix's of Jazz Guitar, to get myself rooted, and then I'll get into it some more.

Some of my favs:

Mike Stern
Scott Henderson
Charlie Hunter
George Benson
Tuck Andress
Jimmy Bruno
Larry Coryell
Bill Frisell
Allan Holdsworth
Martin Taylor
John McLaughlin

Django Reinhardt
Pat Metheny

kurt cobain........ he had more than two wrong notes too...........

Charlie Christian
George Benson
Kenny Burrell
Johnny Smith
Wes Montgomery
Joe pass
Grant Green
Jim Hall
Pat Metheny
Pat Martino

A few more:

Kurt Rosenwinkel
Ben Monder
Peter Bernstein
Joe Diorio

Mike

Another vote for Kenny Burrell. If you're a blues guy looking to get into jazz, Kenny's quot;Midnight Bluequot; album is a great way through the door.

Nice album for the ladies too, if you catch my drift.

i just listened to this cd today and there are about 6 pretty nice jazz cuts on it. also check out***chuck loeb-eBop-its modern, hip, and pretty cool. you might also want to check out stevie ray vaughan's-the sky is cryin cd. it has chitlens con carn and some other cool stuff and allthough its blues he does use alot of jazz 9's and 13's chords wich is very cool. another great Jazz guitar cd I could recomend is Wes montgomery's-jazz masters 14-on verv records. there is some background big band on a couple of the tracks but most of it features him just playin his jazz guitar and you can learn alot from him. check out other jazz greats like Jimmy Ponder but get online first and see if you like the cd's first before you buy anything.

Larry Carlton, Steve lukather if you want some jazz rock stuff

Wow, Ray Barretto. That's cool.

As long as we're throwing classic albums out, check out Giblet Gravy by Benson. Killer bluesy jazz stuff and Herbie just kicks ass on it(duh).

Sh!t, The one I'm thinking of w/ Jimmy Smith is quot;Blue Bashquot;. I have quot;Midnight Bluequot; also. quot;Gee, Baby Ain't I good to Youquot; is such a cool Jazz/blues song!

on this cd I realy like tracks 1,4,5,7,8,9, with 7,8,9, being my favorites. another thing is becouse its older its also fairly cheap to buy

frank gambale
mick goodrick
jim hall
wayne krantz

The quot;Birdquot; is the word...

Joaquin Lievano.....check out his work with Jean-Luc Ponty as well as his solo stuff
Pat Metheny...ANYthing by him
Jimmy Bryant...He's more country swing, but God, he was brilliant!
Wes Montgomery....It doesn't get any more jazz than this.
Al DiMeola....You think Vai is fast? Check out quot;Race with the Devil on a Spanish Hwyquot;!

I agree with all that have been mentioned. Here are some of my own thoughts.

1. Pat Metheny - His individual stuff will have more guitar actually played than the Pat Metheny Group stuff, which I like better due to the arrangements.

2. Al DiMeola - Not really a quot;Jazzerquot; but a Fusion guy...One of my major influences.

3. Allan Holdsworth - Kind of like Al Di Meola from a parallel dimension. Al Di Meola is very staccato and Allan Holdsworth is very legato.

4. Johnny Smith - Moonight In Vermont is a must-have...

5. Lenny Breau - Some say, Chet Atkins did, that he may be the best guitsrist to ever live.

The Larry Carlton's blues-jazzy sound is very interesting. I love room 335

Yes!! Larry Carlton is probably the biggest influence on my playing and the way I approach playing. His tone is astouding as his phrasing. He can bebop with the best of'em but he's more of a Pop-Jazz man who has a passion for Blues.
