I stopped into a pawn shop yesterday close to my house and they had a MIM Strat with a maple fretboard and sunburst finish hanging in the window. It has exactly the same appointments as my Tele which really attracted me to it. When I picked it up I was amazed because the neck was really similar to my beloved Tele. The guitar is in excellent condition and after a string change I am sure it would play great. Should I drop the $229 they are asking for it or is that high for a MIM Strat?
I would love to get it and Seymourize it!! If I do I will need a lot of good recommendations since I have never really owned a Strat before.
I`d say that`s a pretty good deal. Check out the serial # to see what year it is. I think all the MIMs made from `99 on are made of alder wood and before that they were made from poplar. Another thing to look for on the MIMs is the string spacing along the fretboard. I`ve seen a lot of MIMs with the string spacing way off. Let us know what you decide.
What kinda tones do you like? I would say that since you have a Tele, you might be better off with an HH as you second guitar. Perhaps an HH thinline Tele, or you could buy that strat and make it an HH.
I own 6 strats so you know my answer is a no brainer! LOL
The MIM Strat will be routed for a humbucker in the bridge so that give you an option there as far as pickups go.

I just thought I would buy that one as a project. i wouldn't change anything but the pups and maybe the pickguard and bridge. I like the idea of a HH. I really dig a good smooth bluesy Strat. Like I said before I will need some tone guidance since I haven't touched a Strat in about 7 years.

I'm sure you will love a owning strat. I really like mine, perhaps it's a fat strat that I'd like to have as the second guitar. Not all but many guys who love tele's don't care for the tone of the strat bridge pickup. Some like it alot. You'll have to figure out what you want to do with the bridge pup. But, that is the nice thing about strats they are extremely flexible. You can configure it they way you want it SSS, SSH, HSH or HH. You can even Seymourize it and it will be a great guitar for you.
Offer $150 for it, see what they counter with.
Buy it!
Maple fingerboard, sunburst finish, it's just like mine.

Yeah it's just like my #1 Tele as well. I thought about making it the brother of my Tele by putting a black guard on it and removing the pup covers from the middle and bridge!! lol Take a looksy at the Tele. I think this would be cool to do.
My Favorite Tele
I own a bunch of strats! Some USA ones and 3 MIM strats i bought at pawn shops too.... My favourite being a white one with an all maple neck... it has an almost American Fender feel to it that my other 2 Mex strats do not..... I paid between $200-$300 Canadian each for my Mexican strats so $225 USA is not too bad i guess..
I may be an oddball but i like the Mexican Standard pickups... I find they have a nice higher output tone
WhoFan
buy it and snatch my strat pickups i'm selling from me!
Oh if you making that guitar hh your going to need to route out the neck for a humbucker. I think all mim strats in ssh or sss configuration are all routed to be ssh. I had to do that to my guitar, hh mim strat.

MIM Strats are generally routed HSH, at least the older ones that I have seen were...
Definitely get that, man. I love my strat (if my screen name didn't give anything away...).
