Hey guys.
I'm going to scallop my yamaha pacifica 112 tele tomorrow. I got 3 circular files - 1 thin one, 1 medium, and 1 wide one. Also got sandpaper, alcohol, tack cloth, and masking tape. Not going to use a sanding machine.
Going to follow the instructions on this site:
from : localhost/think i will start with the top 6 frets first, as outlined in these instructions:
from : localhost/did a search on all scalloping threads here on SD forums. And I remember Zerb saying that sometimes the neck can't take it, if its a cheapo neck. One thing to keep in mind though is that I will be using 9-46 strings (currently 10-52), so this should assist with reducing the tension on the neck. Do you think the neck will hold up? Should I do a mild scallop or a deep scallop?
If this works out on my pacifica, and I like it, I'm going to do frets 12-22 on my Lado as well. Not going to scallop 1-11, because I still wanna have comfortable chording. (Maybe will do a mild scallop on 1-11).
Can anyone give me some extra precautions in addition to the instructions I am following? Any experiences or advice? Anyone got links to the Scallopwned posting?
Thanks in advance,
Alex
Just don't use a spoon.
LoL omg... Not a very inspiring image to see before a scalloping job!

I was still posting over at guitar.com whenever that happened. That's where those pics originated, a kid tried to scallop his own neck with rat tail files and just didn't pay any attention to what he was doing. He actually posted pics asking if it was ok or not! Then people went nuts w/ Photoshop
Why not just have the guitar refretted with Dunlop 6000's? Real monster frets but they have a similar feel as a scalloped fretboard.

I have 6000's in my Number One. It's like having a nut on every fret. Not quite the same as scalloped, although you do have to be careful not to push down too hard (I was really bad for that at first).
from : localhost/some info for you, and more on the scallopwned thread...
I still laugh when I see that pic from guitar.com, I knew as soon as I saw the title to this thread there was a very good chance that pic would be in here.
Scallop them all! you will have *more* comfortable chording because your hand doesn't work as much....you will get used to it after a week. I have my Ernie Ball scalloped, and I will eventually get my Brian Moore done too...I would even get an acoustic scalloped- like John McLaughlin from Shakti.

Score!!
Good idea Mincer!
I will make a thread with all my scalloping endeavours. Who knows maybe someday, I will be a star of the vault.
I came across a Tele a couple of weeks ago in a pawn shop that had the most extreme decent scallop job I've ever seen. I may still buy the thing. They only wanted $400 for it, and it had EMGs loaded in it, which are about a $250 dollar item, plus it had GraphTech saddles, which are another $70. But the scallops are what got me. They were extremely deep, which would have normally thrown me, but the neck is like a baseball bat. Like I said, I may have to go see if it's still there this week. I agree, Dunlop 6000s just aren't the same thing. I've settled with Dunlop 6100s for my mainstay fretboards, but I like huge frets, too. They just don't feel quite the same as a scalloped board.

where you gettin your graphtech saddles bro?
never seen em THAT high...
I saw a warmoth neck on ebay a little while back...Wizard contour, DEEP scallop job (not factory).
Somthin like that'll do the pretzel act real fast. Just make sure your necks thick enough to support it and ya dont go too deep with it.
Just get it fretted with monster frets!

The last set I bought was straight from the factory about 4 years ago and with shipping and handling, the total cost was about $68 (okay, so I rounded up 2 dollars).
