Always thought Cris Oliva used a JB?

I saw him on the quot;Gutter Balletquot; tour (Open seating, and I was right in front of him the whole night). His sound was killer, though it was a little processed (I remember a HUGE rack of junk next to his cabs, and he was using Marshalls... heads and cabs). His playing was dead on. The whole night was pretty much all songs from quot;Hall of the Mountain Kingquot; and quot;Gutter Balletquot;.

Oh, Cris Oliva was lead guitarist for the band quot;Savatagequot;. It's sad that he died back in the mid 90's from a car accident. One of the best Hard Rock/Metal type guitarists of the day.

Sounds more like a DD than a JB to me, but who knows.

His style reminded me of George Lynch a bit, especially on the quot;Edge Of Thornsquot; record.

glad to see somebody remembers Chris Oliva!!! he was one of the premier metal guitarists of the 80's with killer chops,tone and very,very underated!!! i got to see him play quite a few times back in the mid-late 80's era.awesome live performances! he's one of my all-time three favs along with george lynch amp; andy laroque/king diamond-quot;abigailquot; lp...funny thing,i just was listening to quot;thorazine shufflequot; from the quot;gutter balletquot; cd in my car earlier today.anyways,i thought i saw someone mention that he was using a duncan quot;customquot; pickup on one of these threads about 6-8 months ago? sounds more like a custom than a distortion pickup to my ears......savatage rules!!!!!!

i think he used a quot;customquot; i read it in an interview from back in the day awesome player and killer tone love those riffs man he was good !!!!!!!! and he is missed .

the guy who replaced him after alex skonick used a JB but it really sounds like a DD when criss plays?
it just has that bigger tone than the JB got me?
plus the JB did not have that punch that the DD has when i play savatage stuff?
I use a killler rig so i know that is not the issue and i like to believe that i have some chops as well i do his stuff note for note.
i love his playing!

I can't recall any savatage songs but I hear TSO trys to play like them (one of the original guitarist is in that band i think)

I prefer the quot;wall of tonequot; sound he got on Sirens.

I can get that tone with a JB in my SL2H.

yeah the sirens sound is awesome but what about hall or gutter?

Chis's Gargoyle guitar which he used on Gutter Ballet and beyond had Bartolini pickups. Here is a really cool web site that pays tribute to Chris and also lists his gear. In the about Chris section go to the gear page.

from : localhost/if you havn't heard the John Oliva's Pain album Global Warning you should really check it out. They dug out some of Chis's old riffs and used them on the album. Also Matt LaPorte's Playing is magnificent, almost like he's channeling Chris. Good stuff.
