Anyone discovered any good cheap sleeper pickups? Maybe stock throw aways from quot;xquot; brand guitar or an inexpensive little known manufacturer that sound good?
Don't list p'ups that were okay, but ones that you were actually surprised/impressed by.
I'm personally most interested in 'buckers, but it's an open ended question so go to town with it.

The GFS pickups from Guitarfetish are awefully nice for the money. Mostly around $30 for humbuckers.
The Duncan Design humbuckers, at least the HB-102 set, are often very cool. You might not be able to tell the difference between the USA-made originals and the Korean-made clones... at least sometimes.
I think consistency and quality-control are the main issues with the Design pups. But if you find a good set, they rock.
The stock MIJ singles in my 62RI were surprisingly good, as are the 57/62's that come in some of the other strats.
I like the Ibanez V7 (humbucker, neck only) that comes in my RG1550... a bit muddy, but it has an icy smooth tone that is great for fast runs. Not up there with nice Duncans and Dimarzio, but for being stock Ibanez they are very, very good.
The Ibanez V8 (humbucker-bridge) in the other hand... is pure garbage.
Oh, forgot about the new Ibanez/Duncan bridge models. If I were playing nothing but heavy rock and metal, I'd get one of those new SZ's and definately keep the stockers.
Stew Mac Golden 50s are GREAT for the money.
I've always heard good things about swineshead and thought they were introducing a new model that I would have ordred in a heartbeat-
If you like Duncan Designed, you can get over-the-counter versions of the HB-103 and HB-108 at GC / MF called Buckshot and Detonator, respectively. GC sells them for around $30 each.
I used to have a Peavey Preditor, from the mid 90's. It had a humbucker in the bridge that sounded Horrible. So I replaced it with an invader. And at somepoint, I decided to put the Peavey pickup in the neck of a Strat I had laying around. And its amazingly the Best sounding neck pickup I've ever used. Kinda blew me away. It sounded horrible in the bridge of the preditor, But sounds radical in the neck of a strat. Makes no sense to me. Like I could understand if it sounded Ok in either possition, and not great in one. But to Sound Unbelievebly horrible in one possition, and amazing in another. Its just kinda astonishing. Its like 7.6k, and has a small ceramic magnet. So apperently thats an amazing combination for a neck bucker. I dunno.
Also, I used to have an Old Peavey Patriot (which I gave to my best friend when he started playing guitar). And it had these weird rail type pickups in it, they were sorta like Rail P-90's. Said quot;super ferritequot; on them. And those sounded pretty amazing too. Sounded sumwhat like a p-90, but also alot like mini-buckers. Pretty kool pickups.
And Another Also. I just Bought a quot;douglas shm-91quot; from rondo music. It was like 200 dollars, and I kinda just bought it as a backup, and didn't expect much. I figured I'de have to change pickups and it would still suck. But amazingly, Not only is the guitar Amazing qaulity. But the Pickups amazingly Rock. They're low output, with alnico mags (not sure what grade), with a Dc around 8k (bridge is slightly hotter than the neck). And they sound really really good. I'm actully not planning on replaceing them anytime soon. I'de totally recommend that guitar to anyone lookin for a 335 style guitar cheap. Its Pretty much an Epiphone sheraton clone (actully looks like it might just be a sheraton with a different name on the headstock), with the triple binding, and the block/triangle inlays, gold hardware and grovers. Its pretty amazing for the money. And the Stock pickups alone are worth half the Price (to me).
Oh, and YET ANOTHER also. A buddy of mine bought a couple old Uni-vox Hi-flyers (mosrite copys made in the 70's). And for some reason he decided to route the bodys and replace the pickups with gibson 490 serise buckers. And since he had no use for the uni-vox pickups, he gave em to me. And I tossed em into a dead jazzmaster I had laying around, and They sound amazing in the jazzmaster. I dunno how they sounded in the uni-voxes. But they're pretty sweet pickups. Sorta p-90ish. But sorta different. Kinda breed of they're own.
thats it.....

GFS pickups are great pickups at a reasonable price. They also have some very inovative designs. I have two of the bigmouths and they are great!

I've got a set of GFS Dream 90s in an Epi SG, and it comes really close to sounding like good P90 SG. I'm gonna stick a Brooklyn single coil in my Epi LP Jr to see if I can up the snarl factor!
I'll post the results in the clips forum.
I've been very happy with my GFS Liverpool. It's different enough from the other Filtertron designs I've seen that I don't feel too much like I'm rewarding them for copying someone else's Ramp;D. I'd be a little hesitant to order any of their obvious Duncan knockoffs, not for fear of getting a bad pup, but just because if I want a Duncan, I'll buy a Duncan.
Wow, lots of votes for GFS here.
Which GFS pickups are knockoffs of which Duncan models?
I was going to get a set of GFS Liverpools for my new semi-hollow guitar, then I ran across some good deals on some DiMarzio Virtual PAFs so I opted to go that direction.
Poorman, They have some PAF-style pickups that are a lot like Duncan '59s and they've got a pickup that looks like an Invader.
