Hey guitar dudes -

I am into getting a wireless again. The last time I owned one was maybe 20 years or more ago, and it was a Nady, I think. I didn't like my tone, so I just bumped it and went back to cable.

However, these days, because of the kinds of dates we're doing, I need one badly, and the variety is immense.

What are the critical points to consider? The one I'm interested in has a s/n ratio of only 90db, whereas more expensive ones have obvioulsy higher s/n ratios (but by 5 to 10 db more and $200 higher). In a SERIOUSLY loud, hard-rock setting (like, 120db onstage - no lie) does that discrepancy matter? Does the difference of $200 between Wireless quot;Aquot; and Wireless quot;Bquot; matter if only because there's ONE more UHF frequency available and 10db more headroom - for a DISTORTED instrument? And finally - is a simple quot;true diversity' (that's what I recall about the Nady - it was a very early one) as good as a quot;UHFquot; one? Do guiatrists these days mostly use quot;UHFquot;?

Sorry - I know it's a lot - but I could really use the help.

Thanks so much

True diversity and UHF or VHF have nothing to do with one another. UHF/VHF are a range of frequencies which wireless units operate on. True diversity just means that the receiver is really two receivers and that the unit chooses the stronger signal at any moment. True diversity is a very good thing and I doubt anybody makes a unit these days that isn't true diversity unless it's a 30 dollar piece of junk.

The more frequency choices avaliable the better...especially if you're group is using more than one wireless....if there's another band playing in the bar across the street running wirless too!

90dB of headroom is quite a bit...but more headroom can't be a bad thing.

Is the one that's 200 more better for you? I can't say.

Hope this helps some.

As said, channels and diversity are key in clubs- SN isn't nearly as big a deal, but do note that different rigs color the sound in different ways-

When I was using an old sure system it really compressed the signal to the point that I practicaly never added more compression- Make sure your direct signal to the wireless to make sure you are getting the sound you expect to-
cheers

When you're checking them out, ask to test them in the store. Hook up and walk all over the place listening for any dropouts. A buddy of mine who worked at GC when I got mine let me do that. I went upstairs and sat in the drum room and could still hear it perfectly through the wall and glass doors. No dropouts anywhere I went. It's Shure unit BTW.

don't know if we are still listening to this thread??

The Shure Unit you were happy with: which model was it do you remember??

There is quite a bit price difference between their range and I'm wondering the value break???

My buddy Elvis (from Left Alone) has a $2500 wireless unit. I know this isn't helping you at all, I just thought I'd throw that out there. I had no idea they could even get that expensive! But playing 10,000 people arenas, he likes to walk all over the stage.

To be honest, I can't remember the model. I bought it in the mid-90's. I still have it but am not where I can get to it (not at home). I'll check and post the model later on. If not tonight, then possibly tomorrow night.

thanks. i'm looking at systems around the US$1000-1500 mark and trying to find some thing for gigs buy good enough to record through at the same time. ideally i would like something i can put voice through as well. i want it rack mounted and capable of recording clean sound before it gets pushed through fx to PA. If anyone is in that space i would love to hear.

chairs.

.... i mean cheers!

Oh geesh. Mine cost way less than that, like under $500. It's not rack mountable though, and is guitar only. It works great for me, when I use it anyway. It's the T4G Diversity model, dual antennas, squelch control on back, volume on front.
