I posted a thread once what guitar had nice sounding stock pickups i got alot of people that said quot;ibanezquot; i got a set from and RG V7, V8 and the S1. I put em in my guitar and i was bumbed how bad they sounded. When i wont the auction i bid on 2 because i didnt think ide win em both. Of of the other auctions was a V7 i had to get it.
After some time im bumbed with the sound of these pickup i got this little brrom stock hohner steinberger knock off. The stock EMG selects just didnt cut it for me. Out of the blue i threw that extra V7 in it and WOAH! that pickup sings. The V8 is muddy and had no dynamics at all. The V7 is a bit more tame and i loved it. so i sold the V8 and i got 4 more V7s. I have about 3-4 different guitars with the V7 now. Another one i like is the carvin but i cant remember what model it was i liked.
The VA stock pickups in my Tom Anderson Classic are very good.
I have an Ibanez Les Paul copy from 1970's that smokes with the stock pups. And i am liking my tele highway 1 pickups more each time i play.
Powersounds are so good I don't even consider aftermarket pickups for my Ibeenhads.
In fact, if I ever get a guitar that comes stock with SDs or anything similar, I'm going to replace them with Powersounds ASAP.
The JB/'59 set in my ec-1000 (even tho I changed 'em eventually)
the stock LTD pickups in my m-10. they sound way better than the HZ's that they put in their higher lines of guitars
The only guitars with stock pickups that sounded anywhere near decent are Gibsons. And the Duncan Designed pickups that come on some import guitars are pretty decent too. I can't recall ever playing another guitar with stock pickups that I was happy with.
Ibanez stock pickups are probably some of the worst out there, those powersounds. Their IBZ dimarzio ones aren't that bad though.

as for the question proper.
all the reverends i have played sounds really good stock.
Every US Hamer I've played sounded pretty good from the factory. I also didn't mind the stock 490's in my LP, but the Pealy's I have in there now are the best.
Stock Gibsons I like ...500/496/498/490/BBpros....The 57 classics I've heard in SG reissues and older R series LP's I've really liked as well..
The MIA Strat pups are pretty good too.
Reed pickups...hmmm....tough call...it's not they don't sound good, they just are kind of tonally narrow....they seem voiced primarily for leads...i.e they cut well, and are punchy, and toneful that way...but as soon as I wanna play some chords you realize they have no quot;ballsquot; for lack of a better term. The lead tones I got with my MCCarty were just ungodly....but as soon as I hit an open A chord or a G chord or god forbid I tried some single note riffs on the low E or A string they just got thin/wangy as could be. I find the HFS the same
Everything I've ever got from Ibanez/Jackson,Peavey, Charvel, etc etc I've felt was pretty much crap...
I have two Schecters with Duncan Designeds that I haven't changed out because they sound just fine as-is.
My jackson dxmg sounds decent with the emg hzs in it but i will change them for real emgs soon
As I've mentioned before, the single-coil, humbucker-sized, rail quot;Super Ferritesquot; from mid-80's Peaveys, are outstanding. Kinda like underwound rails Phat Cats. In fact, this weekend, I'm going to try them in my Genny.
Artie
The only stock pickups I really liked are the Texas Specials that come stock in the SRV Strat. That's probably the only guitar where I wouldn't change them out. Ok, maybe's there two. I like the stock pickups that came in the EVHMM guitar. Not bad for DiMarzios...

Of the four Les Paul clones that I've had access to all of them had phenomenal vintage-sounding pickups. One set in particular from an 82' were just so outstanding I almost cheered when I found out that UPS had wrecked the guitar in transit and I would be able to gut it for parts.
They went into my Custom clone and are just stunning.
Jackson pickups are pretty good, the ones in my JS1 sounded totally badass compared to the duncan designs in my H207.
I'll see how the EMG HZs fare, I've used them in the DXMG with 10-46s before and sounded much better than the DXMG with 9-42s...lol, I guess they benefit from thicker strings. w/e though haha
My MIM Strat has a really sweet tone in the neck pup. It can't handle much distortion or high volumes, but if I have neck/middle combo its a pretty sweet tone.
I left the stock Fender CS Nocaster set in a limited edition Tele that I bought 2 years ago -- they sound excellent in that guitar. I am sticking with the SCN pickups in my American Deluxe V-neck Strat -- they are warm and clear, and the S1 switching is very useful. I left the stock Atomic II HB in the neck of my American HS Tele -- that is an excellent, slightly hotter-than-vintage PAF-style HB with great warmth and clarity. I also left the stock RWRP middle pickup in my Texas Special Strat, as I really like its tone, but I replaced the neck and bridge TX Spl's with Antiquity Texas Hots. Oh, and I left the stock Guild HBs in my S-300, but I traded away that guitar last summer.
The stock neck pickups in the current American Series Teles are decent -- I've replaced them in the course of matching up with a better sounding lead pickup (SD Antiquity and JD). The stock Gibson pickups in my LP Classic and Studio weren't bad, but I've played those guitars a lot more since replacing them with SD Antiquity and APH/PG sets, which greatly improved the warmth and clarity of the tone. Ditto for the set of Seths in my ES-137 Classic.
