I have real bad gas for this one.....

from : localhost/am intrigued with putting a project guitar together....but how well would a bolt-on neck work for what would normally be thought of as a set neck guitar? I'm thinking mahogany body with maple top, mahogany neck with ebony board and mini hb's. I could possibly use a rosewood board but I prefer the feel of ebony. Musically looking for blues, blues-rock and classic rock. I appreciate any input.

P.S. I don't seem to be able to post pics directly. I keep getting errors when trying to use the Manage Attachments options. Any help with this would be good too.

Hey Rusty, I think the woods you chose will work well for the styles you're trying to shoot for. Warmoth makes some great stuff, I have a Telecaster that absolutely sings. A lot of people look down on bolt on necks, but I own both styles and they both sound great to me.

To post pics directly, simply use the format as follows:

NOTE: the xxxxxxxxxxx.jpg is whatever address link you have.

Im pretty sure that that guitar is a 25.5 inch scale...that together with the bolt neck, the mini nuckers and the ebony board it's gonna be a good bit brighter that a quot;realquot; L5-S would be. You just have to decide what you really want...call the guys at Warmoth, they have been pretty helpful to me in the past.

Warmoth makes 24.75quot; necks as well, so you can get that Gibson feel. I don't think there will be too noticable diff between the bolt on and the set neck. Acoustically you will probably notice some difference, and some quot;puristsquot; may disagree, but for the money.....and the quality of components you get for that $$, Warmoth is a great deal. By the time you put pickups in it, plug it in and amplify the tone....you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a set neck and the bolt on.

Good luck.

There ya go.,..I didn't know you could get that in a 24.75 inch scale...thats the way to go!

Yeah, I'd probably go with the 24.75.

What do you think the acoustic difference would be?

I have a set neck now and I definitely respond to a lively guitar and neck where I can feel the vibrations, and prefer a higher set up with 10's rather than slinky setup because I think the guitar vibrates better and sounds tighter.

That's definitely what I'm looking for (I love teles too).

Not too concerned about a quot;realquot; L-5S.

My epi alleykat is mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood board and I've got a stock epi neck, gibson firebird middle and dmz super distortion in the bridge. I want to improve on this idea, but don't want to change the a-kat again.

For pickups, I'm looking at a dmz hot firebird pickup for the neck and a duncan SM-3 bridge. If I was going all duncan, I'd go with an SM-1 neck and SM-3 bridge, but I already own the dmz, having never put it into the a-kat.

Brighter isn't bad to me, but I want good clean warm jazz tones out of the neck. I do want to split the pickups and if I can get tele sounds out of it also, that would be great. I prefer teles with rosewood boards over maple, but that's primarily a quot;feelquot; thing. So I'm still not real sure on the fingerboard.

I don't think it's fully possible to get a bolt-on neck guitar to sound like an LP, but you can get in the ballpark. That said, I dig bolt-on neck guitars and a nicely spec'ed out Warmoth will sound and play great.
