I need some help on choosing my new amp.
I 'm looking to buy a tube amp.... I 've narrowed my choice down to two amps: peavey triple xxx or a marshall jcm2000 (dsl or tsl?)...
I did a little search on the forum but haven't really found a good comparisment between the two amps... could someone give me some advise pls (keep in mind I play mainly hard rock and metal)
Guitarist Magazine here did a comparison of a XXX head vs TSL100 head a couple of years ago, and in their opinion the Marshall won hands down. I have a TSL601 combo, which is great, very versatile. Are you after a combo or a head?
I'm after a head....so that I can finally join the half-stack club
I haven't spent much time with the TSL, but I got a chance to play the XXX and absolutely loved it. The cleans are actually very good for a high gain amp. Plenty of headroom. The crunch channel does a pretty decent Plexi immitation if you work it the right way. The Ultra channel is just insane. Soooo much gain, and it'll take you from raging 80's metal all the way to modern crap-metal.
how much you willing to spend?
cause for the cost of a JCM2000 you could probably get something better than that.
in my opinion the JCM2000 DSL is a better amp than the TSL.
bump..... (ps my budget is about 1200$)
I vote for peavey. For some reason marshalls just seem a little muddy no matter what you do (unless its cranked to 9 or 10). I do agree the DSLs are better than the TSL series, but i think i am partial to 6L6 amps.

Also, have you concidered a Mesa. Most people think they are really expensive, but they're no more expensive than a Marshall and you get alot more features. Just a thought.
After all of the reviews I have read for the jJCM 2000 series, I am not going anywhere near those amps. The reliability/dependability just does not seemto have much support. I dont think I'd even go near the XXX, when are you going to need 100-120 watts? I'd assume never. The DSL does have an awesome clean and distortion, but due to reliability, I'd chose the Peavey XXX.
I've head people say that the TSL's have lag when switching channel's via the footswitch.

Never had a problem with mine.
I've owned both the XXX amp; the TSL; if you forced me to pick one, It would be the XXX. The gain channel sounded better to me verses the Marshall's. The TSL didn't have enough distiction in the gain stage for me. It was rather mushy, IMO.
I find my Marshall is ok at higher gain stuff, but I use single coils which keeps things quite bright. Haven't tried with humbuckers, maybe thats when they muddy up.
I owned the TSL head for about 8 months, nont a bad amp, but not an inspiring amp by any means either.
I tryed the XXX head out, same again, nice to a point. But to much quot;unusablequot;gain, yes you can back the gain back but it still didnt do much for me.
Now i sit in front of a Rivera Knucklehead Reverb...... no comparison.
I think you could pick one up for close to what you have to spend, and its fully midi!
For 1200, I'd say the hell with it and pick up a Mesa Mark IV off ebay.
