hey, does anyone know what the duncan designed iommi is like?? with duncann designed pickups wouldnt the quailty all depend on the actual maker?? so this eagle thinggy maker in england (good ol england) coul dmake a nice pickup couldnt they?? duncan designed does not instantly = poop does it??
Dave.
no, some duncan designed pickups are great, others are so-so and can be a bit muddy...it all depends on the pickup.
as for the iommi model i've been looking for one for a while myself but can't seem to find them for sale anywhere.
-Mike
theodie has 2 of them...2 necks, maybe he will pop in on this one! I can tell you that I have a set of Gibson Iommi's and I love them...they are the only non Duncan pickups I own and I have never played anything else that even comes close to the tone of these!
I found a set on ebay once about a month and a half ago. Since i was inbetween paychecks i thought about it for about an hour instead of hitting Buy It Now.
When i went back it was gone. Havent been able to find one anywhere since then....
i love my HB103 bridge pick up in my neck... i think it delivers a very very characteristic sound check it out. www.funinclass.com/~chuck/Chuck.avi
There is no Duncan Designed Iommi. Hate to burst yer bubbles, lads.
The Iommi pickup was built for a short period of time as an exclusive for Patrick Eggle Guitars of Birmingham, England (Tony's home town) who used it on a Tony Iommi Signature Model instrument. Shortly after some large, unnamed, Guitar company got wind of the guitar and pickup, they offered Mr. Iommi their own signature guitar and pickup deal -- and he rescinded his Eggle and Duncan deals.
The Iommi pickup used two blades that were actually magnets. Actually, the bobbins were the same ones we used on the Tele Hot Lead Stack.
In the late '90s, Schecter did a 5-string guitar. I believe it might have been a signature instrument for Mike Tempesta (quot;M33quot;) of Powerman 5000 fame. Because it was a 5-string, we couldn't use the same 6-pole piece design of a standard humbucker, so we developed a blade version of the Duncan Designed HB-103 and we called it the HB-104.
However, unlike the Iommi, with this pickup, the magnet was underneath the pickup, like on a standard humbucker. The blades were used to direct the magnetism towards the strings -- like on a Dimebucker or a Hot Rails.
So there ya have it.

Evan-- Why doe's the Duncan website purposely mislead people? by saying-
The HB-104 is a blade humbucker that's based on a design we created for England's Patrick Eggle Guitars' Tony Iommi model. The guitar was short-lived, but the pickup lives on.
That is right from the seymour Duncan website.
It doesn't even mention the whole Mike Tempesta 5 string Schecter thing.
If the pick isn't an Iommi Model why doe's it bear his name in the product description?
well, whatever that hb104 is...why on earth can i never find one for sale lol??

I think the only way to get one is to go to Guitar Center and directly order one from them.
Nope, they are only available on factory made guitars. They can not be bought outright from GC or anyone else.

Who writes that website anyway? Didn't I mention that purposefully misleading people is one of my favorite pastimes?
Just kidding!
There’s more to the story. OK? Mike Tempesta used to be the tech for Scott Ian years ago. He heard the story about the Iommi pickup and had the custom shop build him one so he and Scott could try it out. They both loved it.
When Schecter and Mike set about to create the 5-string baritone with the HB-104, they wanted a pickup like the Gibson Iommi. In other words, a high output blade humbucker. And that’s what the HB-104 is.
However, as I mentioned above, its construction is quite a bit different. So maybe I should change quot;based onquot; in the website description so I don’t go purposefully misleading people in the future.
But it’s just soooooooo fun.
so wait, is there any way to order one? b/c i have wanted one for while but haven't found any used ones and i'll just buy a new one if i can...i give up looking for used lol.
-Mike
I wondering if it's not a Tony Iommi model why is his name even mentioned?
