I like the tones on this amp for clean, blues and classic rock, but i also play metal. Could i get an overdrive/distortion pedal with it so i could play metal? If this would make me able to play metal with a classic 30 than what pedal do you suggest, and if i shouldnt get a classic 30 for heavier stuff what tube amp is good thats under 600$? thanks in advance
I'm not sure about metal but with tube changes and a new speaker they rock. They can also be modded fairly easily. I'm waiting to try the Duncan pickup booster to front end this amp. Hey it's all I've got at the moment so I've got to try. By the way with the pre amp cranked and the volume on about 6 I get a really nice quot;sandmanquot; type crunch. I'm playing a Epi Les paul with a duncan custom in the bridge strait into the amp.
A great cheap pedal is the new digitech Bad Monkey. $39 and it sounds great boosting a Classic 30. Then if you want quot;scoopedquot; tone, pick up a graphic EQ and put it in the loop.
thanks guys, also whats the difference between overdrive and distortion? and would an overdrive pedal or a distortion pedal work better in my situation?
Distortion pedals work better on the clean channel, whereas the overdrive pedal can work on the clean channel for a bluesy crunch or slam the gain channel for increased crunch and sustain. I personally prefer to get the amp crunchy then slam it with an overdrive. To me it sounds more natural and you can clean up by using guitar volume, then turn volume up and get a nice classic rock crunch, then kick on the boost for some heavy rockin'. If you need to go from pristine clean to all out crunch with one footswitch, then go distortion pedal. Otherwise I prefer the versatility of the overdrive. Good Luck.
from : localhost/even though it's not my thing, I was pretty impressed with it when I was testing out the Bad Monkey. It would rock through the clean channel of the PV.
I personaly dont think you'll be pleased with the C30 in the Metal Department.
I'd look elsewhere, even with a pedal.
IN the same budget range, the Crate Vintage with EL34 is another good choice.
I can't comment on the other pedals mentioned here, but for heavier things I use a Tonebone Hot British pedal and I like the results. That pedals got some serious chunk to it. Might be worth a try.
