Not completely sure honestly. I don't have a guitar with EMGs or basswood, but I'm sure a lot of ibanez's have EMGs in them.
Wait for some EMG/basswood users.
I've got a Dimebucker in my Basswood RG1570, VERY METAL! Just in case you wanted an alternative.
It would probably sound pretty good, Basswood RG's aren't exactly overly bright or overly dark guitars, i can't understand why everyone on the metallica board said they would sound like ****, did any of them give reasons???
I haven't however had any experience of EMGS in basswood, but im sure someone will pipe in soon enough.
Since the EMG is active, I doubt the wood of the guitar would play any significant role.

i thought it would play a role
I think it would sound good. My friend is about to drop two 81's into his basswood ibanez.
I have an Invader in my basswood strat and it sounds Fin' amazing!
Rock On ~!~
I prefer EMG's in mahogany and DiMarzio's in basswood.
That said, an EMG 85 sounds killer in ANYTHING.

Have you ever owned an EMG? Sure, EMG's sound like EMG's, but the guitar's construction has a huge effect on tone, as is the case with any other pickup.
BTW, I think the 60/85 combo would work out very well in basswood. They will add top end and tighten up the bottom, giving you tons of punch and clarity.
I put an EMG 81 in my Ibanez RG570 for a while. Tone wise, it didn't sound that much difefrent than the stock pickup. It sounded pretty sterile in that guitar. Duncans like a JB sound alot better.
The EMG81 sounded alot better in a strat or les paul

The tap tone on basswood has a pleasant 'pink pink' sound to it... nice clean midrange vibration. EMG's should pick up a nice clean kerchoink.
..........Metallica forum? Honestly, after it's been treated to 70 db of gain, graphic eq'd, and fed through 4x12 cabs at 200db, I can't tell prime mahogany from toilet seat.........
Well i've got em all installed my guitars set up and all i can say is WOW
thanks for the advice.
As soonm as my mixer comes in the post ill dig out my mics and record something.
Any requests? and thanks again for all the advice
Don't mean to hijack the thread, but what would EMGs be like in Alder, then?

I mean no disrespect Benjy but, I honestly think the construction of a guitar has alot less of an effect with EMG's than with passives. BTW, I have owned EMG's!
I hated the EMG 81 in my Ibanez RG570- basswood body. It had no character, very empty sounding, VERY similar to the stock Ibanez V8 pickup. I mounted that 81 in an alder bodied strat and it sounded killer, like Mick Mars of Motley Crue in Kickstart my Heart. In a Les Paul it adds clarity to an otherwise muddy guitar, and keeps the Les Paul Tone.
A JB sounded better, as well as Tone Zone and Evolution

Killer, like in any other body wood guitar! I love mine, wouldn't trade them to anything.
