I love my MIM Nashville Tele; it's got the Fender thang covered in my book. Now I need a guitar to do the Gibson fat kinda sound, so I'm thinking about a double-humbucker FrankenTele. I used to own an American-made Schecter PT (see old Bamp;W pic at the link in my signature). That guitar is the gold standard for H/H Tele's if you ask me, but they're extremely rare, and I can't afford to buy one or even re-create it out of new parts.
But I have this beat up Fender body, made of ash. I could add to it a humbucker-style Tele bridge and an aftermarket Tele neck. I figure the maple neck might make up for the lack of a maple top on the body.
Even though this axe will be nothing like a Les Paul, I want to finese the pickup selection to push it in the LP direction - I want a medium-gain classic rock sound (think Page, Angus, and Kossoff).
If this was a Les Paul I think the answer would be a pair of '59s or Seth's. But since it's NOT a Les Paul, is there some other pickup that might compensate for the guitar's inherent differences?
Discuss.
Well, since it's working so well in my Thinline Tele, I'd say a Pearly Gates in the neck would over the fat classic rock sounds. AS far as the bridge goes, something fat and with medium output would be in order. Maybe the Blues Tembucker would work, or if you want a more traditional look (and higher output), the Custom Custom would do the trick. Good luck.
SD 59's or Alinico II Pro's will get you there, I use both sets in mine. If your on a budget, Stewmac Golden Age Humbucker are very nice for the money.
I'll show you the ultimate H/H Teles...
The one on the far right has EMG 81b and 85n. The one on the right is Dual HotRails.
