Oh man i just noticed this new edition to the Gibson Signature Custom Shop.... from : localhost/ That and the black one would be killer if i had some real money to play with....

Notice the 1st fret marker? LP Deluxes didn't have those but the PT model does!

I gotta say that I would opt for the Page or Perry!!!

Well even i will admit that the Pancake body LP Deluxes were not the best LP's but the only reason i would want that guitar is because to a Who nut like me That Is The Guitar..... I have a 76 Deluxe and i have a love and a hate for it... I've played many other 70's Deluxes that are much better then mine. But It was the guitar i dreamed about as a kid so i had to have one. Cool I hadn't seen that.

My buddy rebuilt 6, it was pretty freaking cool to check that out.
Pete set flight to No.6 out of a 5th story hotel window or something like that, so there was some work to be done.

Would loved to be able to of checked out a PT LP up close. I was hoping to check one out at the Hard Rock while i was in London England.... I heard there was one of his LP's there and friend sent me photos of it. But it was gone by the time i got there. It was an odd one.. 3 Dimarzio Humbuckers loaded in a body of an LP Deluxe.... Never seen Pete use 3 fullsized Humbuckers before.... Must of been a studio guitar of some sort.. I hear it's in Tampa Florida's Hard Rock Vault now...

6 was a red sunburst one... no? I have seen on a website that they list all the known numbers of Petes Les Pauls and their known where-abouts..... But you can see photos of Pete with guitars of different colours with the same numbers... so there was more then just one Number 1, Number 2 and so on.... Pete's tech said what was number one at the begining of a tour was not always number 1 by the end.... Pete had many LP's from the sounds of it and used to fly into the factory and buy them by the dozen after trying a bunch out. Plus he also got them from Manny's in NY. He only started to add the humbucker and large numbers on the front of the LPs from 1976-end of the 79 tour... So 4 short years and many LP's.

The funny part of these PT Les Pauls from the custom shop is they are based on the LP that Pete smashed in Brighton 1979, and threw around at the end of WGFA at the end of the Kids Are Alright Movie... This number 1 LP is said to be the only 70's LP Pete still owns... The necks on Petes LPs i heard when they were new were shaved down thinner and repainted... I's like to pick up a pT LP oneday and feel how different that custom neck shape is....

site of interest is this fan who collects PT and Who gear
You can see photos of Number 6 if you click on Number 6 on the Pete guitar page

The really weird thing is, I read an Allan Rogan quote saying that Pete didn't use all that extra Dual Sound special wiring. And know wonder - his tone from a stock goldtop Deluxe on that Houston '74 concert tape you sent me was his best ever in my book.

But one of those custom shop models would be cool to own, though.

On a Who web site there is a quote from Pete saying that he has no idea why he modded his Les Pauls with the extra pickup/switches... he went on to say he liked the way it looked......

I love the tone Pete got in the mid 70's with those LP Deluxes... everyone says Leeds 1970 is The best and i do like that sound don't get me wrong but the LP Deluxe sound from the Who's 75ish era to me is wonderful!

Well , a limited run of 75 means a price above 10 k$ in Gibson's language !!!

I think you can find a LP deluxe for less than 2k and the mod to have a middle hum should be around 300 bucks at your local luthier . You'll get something similar for far less money !!!

Oh for sure! I have a 76 Deluxe that i got for $700..... To tell the truth the new 2005 Les Paul Deluxe reissues are a much better guitar then the old ones!!! I love the new one the local store has in.... it's $300 cheaper then the Standards.... I held that LP in my arms for about 2 hours oneday racking my brain trying to figure out a way to take it home.... in the end i put it back..

The Gibson Custom Shop has now added the Number 9 Townshend Les Pual.. It's a red sunburst... so now you can get his number 1-wine red, his number 3-gold top, and his number 9- in red sunburst... The sick part is if i was a millionair i'd buy them..WhoFan

I just saw on Musician's Friend website that the Red Sunburst Number 9 Pete Townshend Signature Les Paul is $5399.00 USA, or something close to that.... Wow that is expensive but still not as bad as i thought it would of been....

Pete auctioned off one of the Gold Top Prototypes and it raise $22,000 English pounds... so i guess the custom shop versions are a deal compaired to the prototypes direct from Pete

I'm gasing pretty hard for these PT Lp's... Man if i can only win the lotto in the next few months..... i'd buy one of each colour... or buy a bunch of 70's Deluxes in great shape and skip the Custom shop prices.... of course i'd have to buy the hiwatt Signature PT Head as well... or the Reeves PT Version.....

You should buy a new Deluxe for $1500 (I think that's what they cost) and just mod it. It sure would save you a hell of a lot of money.

To tell the truth i'd love to own the new Deluxes as they are much better Lp's then the 70's versions! I would not mod them...... i'd keep trhem stock as cutting into such an expensive guitar to add a humbucker and 2 switches like Pete did is not a wise thing to do for value sake... Pete never really used the extra pickup and switches much anyways... He said he just likes the way it looks.. I love the who's 73-75 era for non modded LP Deluxes and the sound Pete got on stage with them... Friend of mine who owns the Hiwatt PT signature head tells me that Pete's tone is in that amp and not the guitars anyways.....

Some of the early reissue Deluxes didn't have the pancake body (which is a huge plus IMO) and actually are great gutars for less or around the $1500 mark. As for Pete's numbered Deluxes there is one at the Hard Rock in Atlanta...the number has been pulled off but you can still see it...cool guitar, I think I have a few pics somewhere...I'll look around. As for the fist fret inlay, there ctually were a handfull of 70's Deluxes with a first fret inlay...they are hard to come by but there are a few.

Let me know if you can find those Pictures... I have seen a bunch of PT Guitars from various Hard Rocks... In London England i got to hold a copy at the vault, and at the HR pub across the street from the vault they have Korina Exployer and a V owned by Pete...... The New York HR had a Goldtop, Florida has an odd ball Deluxe with 3 Dimarzio Dual sounds in it, and Vegas HR has a red sunburst LP....

I prefer the non-pancake body Deluxe which is why i like the new reissues over the vintage ones.... i hear the new MINI pickups are not quite the same as the originals... Maybe the duncan Custom Shop ones are better?

The extra 1st fret inlay is not on the guitars Pete owned in the 70's so i find it odd they added that to the Signature.... maybe Pete felt there always should of been one there....

I see that the Grammy's Charity Auction is offering on EBAY a Pete Townshend Custom Shop Les Paul.... A red sunburst Number 9... It is signed by Pete and on it Pete wrote... quot; This one has Flames like 1971quot;... Did LP Deluxes have Flame tops in 1971?

This Custom shop Signature model is modeled after Pete's late 70's LP's... 3 piece Maple necks and 3 piece maple tops, multi laminate bodies... But in 71 did those versions of Deluxes have Flame tops... i don't remember seeing any....

Hey WhoFan.......did you have enough gas to pony up the $8500 to go jam with Daltrey at the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp this weekend?

Those are the biggest quot;mini-togglesquot; I've ever seen.

only because i don't have any real money to play with...
Seriously i would never pay $8500 to go to a Ramp;R Fantasy camp even if i had the money....
