I am considering building (or at least trying to build) a telecaster with parts from Warmoth. It seems that their part are good, but I have'nt seen them other than on their web site. Any comments?

Anyway, here's the idea:
- thinline body with F-hole, mahogany w/ maple flame top, binding, rear routed
- maple/ birdseye neck, standard thin
- 2 x humbuckers (don't know model yet)
- 2 x volume (never use the tone anyway) with push/ pull for single split
- three-way switch
- hardtail bridge (don't know model yet)

I'm hoping for a Les Paul sound with little more brightness to it (maple neck, hollow body, right?)

Anyone tried this set-up?

Check out They have a lot more options as far as neck shape goes, most with no additional charge.

Never seen usaca stuff but i have some Warmoth stuff and i really love it!!!! Their stuff to me is the highest quality parts out there! I really enjoy building Fender style guitars out of Warmoth parts as the parts are not only top Quality but you can choose every detail on your guitar unlike buying a Fender on the shelf at a store!!!! Amazing!

Yeah and zz top swears by them!! They are about 10 minutes from my house.....now.....PLEASE HIRE ME! I need a dream job! Luthier school here I come.

I was bugging Warmoth to let me work for them at one point but Ken said i would be crazy to move way over to WASH USA from here to work as a Sander... Most new employees are sanders.

But the night school course i took was really cool and i learned so much! I made about 12 Strats and Teles but i have no place to spray finnish so i have kind of given up right now....

I take it you're in BC? Which school did you do the program through. I'm guess it wasn't Summit School of Guitar Repair (I don't believe they offer their program through night courses)

No I am in Ontario Canada and it was a course offered at a Highschool's wood shop in my town at night. One of the teachers at the school was a guitar maker and he offered a course on how to make them. It was really cool as he not only showed you how to make guitars but also showed you how to make a lot of your own tools! Like for acoustic guitars he showed us how to make a steam bending iron out of a cast iron drain pipe and the heating elements out of a toaster oven! That way you can soak the sides of an acoustic in water for about 30 minutes and then bend them over the hot pipes. Many neet tricks like that!!!!!

I was going to go to Guitar Making school either in Mich or Arizona but the cost was crazy. I ended up getting a good paying Government job and now i will not leave for guitar school.... But what i learned at that course stays with me... I even had a part time job as a repairman at a music store for a while because of that course.

Have you heard of Lado guitars? I know they have a luthierie school in Lindsey (fairly small town) which is supposed to be quite good, but again the cost of tuition is up there. If only I had a night school program like that when I was younger instead of learning through books and such (still teaching myself electric making)

Yes i had heard of that Lado course. When he moved his shop from Toronto i bought a bunch of Duncan pickups and parts off him. His Guitars were always too expensive for me but he did good work. There is a few other courses around Ontario that i have come across... One is out near Strattford and they offer a 2 week quickly course to start.

I second USA Custom Guitars, especially for necks. Here's the one I used on my strat project, in the middle of the finishing process.Looks like a nice neck FretFire! Going for a Floyd are ya......

My first guitar i made was a strat with a hardtail..... I used the Strat shape but didn't cut the tummy and forearm cuts so the body felt like a tele....
No fender style strat shapes with Hardtail yet, all with trems.... The only other hardtail strat body i made was a doubleneck.... the 6 string was a hardtail....

Most of the bodies i made are still not 100% completed since i lost interest after trying to find ways of spraying finnish... saddly when you do not have your own place it is hard to spray stinky finnishs and let them dry....

WhoFanNope it's just an LSR roller nut. The guitar's been done for a couple of weeks now, it's a killer .
FretFire, i was wondering why you would choose a Fender Mexican Body to put those great parts on? I own many Fender Mexican guitars and enjoy playing them but for a nice custom neck i'd lean more towards a nice custom body too.... If you saw my collection it is full of cheaper Mexican made Fender stuff and Custom made guitars so i do use the Mex Fenders..... Just Wondering?

Back on topic...

I don't think you're going to get anything near a Les Paul sound from a hollow thinline Tele with a maple neck. If you really want a Les Paul sound, build a Warmoth LP. Even then, there will be some differences due to the different neck joint. Warmoth parts are top notch, so are the parts from USA Custom Guitars. Custom guitar projects are largely what you make of them, and I'm willing to bet you'd end up disappointed if you built a guitar with these specs and thought you were going to get a Les Paul tone.

Perfectly understandable question . Honestly, the selling point was the color, I couldn't get it on any other body so I went with an MIM. This was also my first attempt at building a guitar, so I wanted to keep the budget fairly low. I built the entire guitar for about $750, most of which was covered by gear sales prior to starting the project (I think I spent maybe $100 out of pocket, which was nice).

FWIW, on the project I've just recently started I'm having the body and neck both custom made .
