Hey guys.

I'm planning on changing the Hex Bolts on the Screamin' Demon that I have in my Gordon Smith guitar to see if it improves the sound of the pickup in this guitar.

Is it as simple as unscrewing the Hex Bolts and putting the screws in their place? Can this mod be done with the pickup still in the guitar?

Thanx for any info.

I would say that it is possible to do it wil the pickup in the guitar and it is as simple as unscrewing the hex pieces and reinstalling the screws.

This is something I'd not thought about. Would this be a problem?

I would not worry about it. You will lose a very small amount of wax. I've done it without a problem.

That's a relief then Thanx for the info.

With how my luck's going at the minute, i'll lose too much wax and destroy the pickup when I change the screws

Craig

Maybe you'll lose too much wax, but make the pick-up sound better
Sorry, I'm not a big fan of the screamin' demon.
Rock on

craig....Yes,I did my changes with the pickup in the guitar...I always put some white teflon tape around the threads before I screw the new screws in..Probably not needed, but that's just me....My mindset is that it replaces the lost wax?
You're going to hear a fatter and warmer sound Scremon Demon(That's what I heard)and I Loved the change it made...Took a bit of the high shrillness out of the Demon and seemed to add some overall balls..I didn't change the height or anything on mine after I replaced the screws, but I did adjust the screws into the bobbin a good ways and then adjusted up or down for balance..

I know I've told you this before, but ...

What Seymour has joined together let no man pull apart

Thanx for the new replies guys.

I feel alot better knowing that the amount of lost wax shouldn't make too much of a difference Originally Posted by TwilightOdysseyI know I've told you this before, but ...

Apart from the fact that several guys have changed the Hex screws for normal screws and prefer the sound

Craig

one time I took the magnet out of my screamin' demon and put in a salamander, one of those little lizards y'know and it sounded awesome!!

I've been sick for a few days, and taking cough medicine, anything with dextromethorphan in it really messes me up, so apologies for weirdness today.

What kind of screws are you guys using to replace in the pickups? Would this mod help the Lil Screamin Demon as well (strat bucker version)?

Thanks

Mark

They are talking about replacing the six hex screws with regular slot-heads. I have never played the Lil' Demon, wouldn't know if it could benifit. I don't think it would be as easy in the Lil' Demon, the screws are not standard size.

Well, I tried last night to take the Hex bolts out of the Demon and I couldn't even get them out!

It turns out that I don't have an Allen Key of the right size to fit the Hex bolts of the pickup, so I'm going to have to wait until I can get into town to buy a new set of Allen keys before I can try the Demon with 2 rows of slotted screws

Craig

Ok , I`m not the brightest bulb in the batch here. I take it that the slotted screws that are being mentioned are the adjustable pole pieces that come standard on one of the bobbins on a humbucker? If so , the hex bolts in a Screamin Demon are being replaced with adjustable pole pieces(slotted screw)? This sounds like something I might want to try with my Demon. Stratdeluxer97 Help!

Correct...Just remove the 6 allen screws in the Demon and put the slotted screws in their place...Not sure on the allen wrench size, but I have several allen wrenches and Ihad one that fit...

It makes the Demon fatter, less highs, and it was an improvement in my strat.I don't think a Les Paul would benefit from the mod though..

John

what about replacing the hex screws with slugs? would it be possible without any bigger mod?

y'know to make it look like a regular bucker. anybody done it and stuck it into the neck position?

Davey, replacing slugs for hexpoles wouldn't work sorry. The hex poles on a Screaming Demon are basically the same size thread as a normal slotted screw #5/40. You'd need a hole the size of #10/32 to drop in slugs.

I am guessing you could drill out the bobbin to facilitate slugs, but there's a strong possiblility to make a mistake with a high rpm drill that close to the copper wiring. A costly mistake. Tread with caution my friend.
