I've just recieved an order from stew mac and I'm not that impressed with the pots I've recieved. They're 500k for a epi SG and I know they'll do the job but it looks like they are the same quality as the stuff in the guitar. The brand is Alpha.
I recall hearing that CTS pots are no longer made in the USA. Does anyone know if this is true?
Is it worth paying Gibson prices to get their pots? Are they that much better than stuff through the major parts houses?

I've seen the posts promoting replacing the electronics in an epi to improve the tone, but it usually involves a pickup change as well so how much is the electronics vs. better pickups?

Just wondering....

This is one of those things that I don't want to say with too much authority - 'cause I have none but I'm fairly certain that the quality of different pots has to do with longevity and quot;feelquot;. Not with sound quality.

And the longevity issue can be equalized with a little shot of Caig Labs Deoxit.

Artie

I use (and sell) CTS pots in all my guitars and I've never had any problems. I actually replaced the stock Gibson pots in my LP Standard, but honestly, I didn't notice a huge difference (even though I went from 300K to 500K). There's a slight difference, but not earth shattering by any means. I'm with Artie on this one - I think its a longevity thing.
