I've been wondering what the differences are, the only two I notice are the cleans and the price, they seem identical to me otherwise. Anyone wanna give me a hand here? I've narrowed down my new amp to one of these two, and thinking I will spurge the extra for the JSX just for the better cleans, unless you guys convince me that the XXX is better... or something. lol.
Cheers!
William

To me the JSX seems a little smoother with a little less gain in the preamp and better cleans.

I agree with Jag513. The overdriven sound is warmer and it is easier to hear seperate notes.

The JSX has a built in noise gate too, not sure if the XXX has that.

With the JSX you pay a bit more and lose the damping switch on the back. But the JSX is simply voiced better if you ask me. The cleans are great and the overdrive is less compressed, punchier, and clearier sounding. Very nice for the price.

honestly i think the damping switch is what makes the xxx better (imo)

so the jsx has a noise gate, big deal, they can be bought

i think the biggest difference is that one is 6l6, and one is el34, that pretty much sums up the difference.

if you're a marshall guy, jsx will be more your thing, if you're a mesa/fender/other 6l6 peavey guy, xxx is more your thing

He also asked about the price difference, just pointing that fact out. Whether or not that's important is up to him.

i know, it wasn't a shot at you in any way, and if i offended you i'm sorry, just pointing something out

a built in noisegate could be a selling point for some people, even if they like the tone of the other amp better, impulse buys, yanno

I'm just trying to help put things in perspective, i guess

What kind of music do you play mostly?

To me:
Classic to heavy=JSX
Heavey to heavier=XXX

I own a JSX by the way.

I thought they were switchable for wither tube?

I don't really know.

But where ya been, Willy?

You can swap the tubes, so it's not that.

Despite tube differences - the JSX is smoother, and a bit cleaner sounding. Not as agressive as the XXX, which kind of kills it for me.

That said, the resonance and presence controls combined with the fat switches on the gain channel are superior to one damping switch.

Now, if the XXX had that, it'd be perfect... maybe even better than the 5150. You could set up one channel for tight, punchy rhythm, and the other for a smooth, liquidy, bigger, singing lead tone.

Unfortunately, the JSX's crunch channel can't get quite high-gain enough for doing that well.

i heard that for whatever odd reason, the JSX sounds better with 6L6's and the XXX sounds better with EL34'si cant vouch for the JSX, but my XXX is great with EL34s

Wow, old thread.

holy christ! i was thinking quot;whatd you mean? that was only like 3 days ago.quot; then i realized......3 days and one year ago. wow.
