What things do you do to your guitar as time goes by with them? as opposed to what do you take to a shop/tech to have done?

Secondly: How did you learn the certain job? Experimentation? being taught?

Just saying this because yesterday i did my first ever truss-rod adjustment. My acoustic was developing a considerable bow and the action was high so i got it a lil straighter. All went well and now I'm thinkin i will always do my own truss adjustments from now on.

I'm sure ive left out some important things that get done

The only things I haven't done are fret and nut work, although a while ago I bought a load of guitar repair stuff from the US (it's still at my uncles house in florida at the mo!), once I get that I will start to practice on the rest...

The reason I learned was because I didn't have the money for a tech to do my truss rod when I changed string guages, learned alot here.

I've done everything on that list besides the fret and nut work, though I'll be doing some fret dressing on my next guitar here pretty soon (beveling and dressing the ends).

I do everything that may need doing... but I´m also a trained luthier and not your average hobbyist

I dont do fret leveling and nuts. Everything else is a breeze. Just take your time doing the truss rod adjustment. Adjust a little at a time and it should be ok.

I do pretty much everything except the frets and nuts. I replaced and cut the nut on my old Epiphone, but it wasn't the greatest job. It worked, but it could have been better. I wish I had some more practice, as I'm sure I could get the hang of it. I'd also like to learn how to do fretwork, but I don't have the tools or anything. Maybe someday.

So far, restringing, set up the Floyd and I adjusted the neck once. I've only been playing since February though so there's not much I could have done.
I learnt through the net mostly but I wish I had more experience. I'll learn fretjobs next I think, it's always useful. I also wish I knew more about wiring, I'll have to get into this sometimes.

I'm fearless when it comes to anything but the frets and the nut. But that's mostly because I don't have the proper tools and those two things don't often need attention.

so far i can only change strings. i'll be super happy if someone could show me how to do the other stuff in person.

Used to be a guitartech, I am still from time to time.
I do it all except refretting.

I keep telling you to come by, it´s only like 1 1/2 hours in a car, if that

Not my fault that you´re glued in place

ok man, maybe in summer hols i can bring my axe over and we check it together. there's a local shop but i dun trust em

Zerb.... where did you learn your tech skills in the first place?

I haven't done any fret or nut work yet. I'd like to learn to do both, but the infrequency of fret or nut replacement makes it difficult for me to invest money on the specialized tools required to perform the work. I've though about doing the nut on the SG project when it's done, but haven't decided if I feel like tackling that or not.

I'm glad everyone so far can restring I do it all except fretwork.

Well, wehn I first started, I knew nothing...then a tech butchered my Flying V on a fretjob, and That´s when I bought the Guitar Player Repair Guide and literally learned by doing... Still haven´t refretted my V, though

Then I studied with Mrs. Jean-Pierre Vocat of Riehen by Basel (CH) until her untimely death 3 months before my quot;Finalsquot;.....

ANy after that I just did repairsand building out of PRO Music before I bought the shop (after which I still did them, of course).

I am part of that club also!!! I do what ever they need.

restring, intonate, truss rod/action, and wiring(not much yet)

i do everything except nuts and frets.

Cheers people. Just something i was a lil curious about. Im a cheap skint student so i think ill do most of these jobs myself. Havent done frets or nuts. One day i'll learn but anyway all is good so far.
