I heard that the wood of the guitar desides the string gauge for the guitar. Its that true. If so what kind should a mahogany body with a maple neck and ebony fretboarduse, or a maple body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard. This can not be true, then every one should change theirs to get the best sound possible. I know one makes there own sound, but still one can make mistakes and choose the wrong one. Can someone confirme this please.

I've never heard this in my life. However, since you asked....
I think it would be more along the lines of the amount of string you have determining how much energy is transfered to the wood of the guitar through the bridge. A thicker string gauge is going to have more material in it, more metal, which means when you pluck, more inertia and energy that is transfered to the bridge. From there, the rigidity of the bridge determines how efficiently that energy is transfered to the body. If you have a dorked up bridge, like mine, there will be less energy transfered, less sustain. From there, certain woods like certain frequencies, or have their specific sound. I've played electric guitars that seemed to have very sensitive low 3 strings. But then again, I'd say 75% of the tone in an electric guitar comes from the pickups, 10% from strings, 15% from body wood. On an acoustic, the woods play a more important role. Also, some pickups tend to favor certain string gauges, but that difference is very minor.
So in my opinion, try all the strings that you want. Just realize that if you go with 8s, there's not going to be much tone, etc, compared to 10s.
Go slap whoever told you this.
I don't buy that if you had a basswood body and used 13's that the guitar would become a horseshoe!
