I'm seriously gassing for a scalloped neck ... I think I'm gonna go for it.The neck being scalloped doesn't really have much to do with their sound, except for maybe some vibrato here and there. Scalloping affects how the guitar plays, not really how it sounds. You'll need a pretty light touch to keep from bending notes out of tune, and therefore you'll probably be freed up to blaze around a little bit faster. You'll also be able to apply slight bends and vibrato to chords, which can be cool if done right.
i love mine, but id agree that it has little to do with sound, but allows a lighter touch...listen to some John McLaughlin for jazzy scalloped neck goodness as well.
They're definitely not for everyone, but I like them a lot, myself. They won't make a difference in your tone, but they WILL allow you to get each and every string by the balls. They do require a different touch, but if you're into McLaughlin and Blackmore, as well as Yngvie, it's worth the journey.
Just don't do it yourself for the first time on a neck you plan on using...
eesh. I shudder every time I see that picture.
scallop= cool. had my scalloped neck on a tele for a while, gonna be puttin it back together shortly.
I have one on my super strat. I do like it whenever i'm doing arpeggios and fast paced soloing, but whenever i'm playing blues and such, I play with too much of a heavy hand and end up playing out tune.
malmsteen is awesome, are you getting his signature strat by any chance?
ok... who's gonna post the malmsteen Oh Noes pic? i'm too lazy to look it up
I have a scalloped neck that i made sitting around for my new guitar project, I can't wait till the project is done so i can see what it feels like.
Loved the scalloped neck on my Malmsteen (and the supa-jumbo frets). Def allows for easier vibrato, and bending to exact pitch much easier too. But yeah, a light touch is neccessary. I didn't find it really made me able to play any faster, but I played much quot;cleanerquot; or more precisely. It will clean up your fretting.
I just can't friggin play/deal with Strat bridges...totally uncomfy, no matter how many times I buy/try them...no matter how much I love the tone of a Strat, they just don't work for me...so I got rid of it.
I'd def consider having another neck scalloped on a guitar w/ a TOM (hmmmm...maybe thats what I should do with my JAckson...)

You better not even think about doing it to your FB. That's a call for a serious whoopin'.

I love Yngwie's playing ... however, I'd like 22 frets, and I would also prefer the 2 point trem instead of the vintage 6 screw.
You boys want to see what I had in mind??
You gotta check out this scallop job. from : localhost/haven't received an answer to my email yet.
Or I may just go with a Warmoth ... either a maple necked strat or a V with 3 single coils.
Thanks for the input.
I think i'd like a scalloped neck... Been wanting to try a Warmoth scalloped neck.....
The potatoes are better.

I don't think his diagram is quite accurate though- on my board, I don't run into any wood at all, and I only press down until the string contacts the fret and no more...digging deeper over one side of the fret doesn't really matter.

I thought the same thing.
Moreover, $350 is alot of mizuma for a scallop job. Even that one.
If I don't get a reply from him by Friday ... I'm goin Warmoth, and skip that 3-6 month waiting period ... and save about $1,500 semolias.

I don't think I'd worry about waiting until Friday .
I don't think so either. I would have gone to Warmoth in the first place considering the price he's asking.
