Hey guys,

I'm just now getting into a kind of a metal state of mind.

I need to know what is the worst, better and best pickup for Metal and Punk:

LiveWire™ Classic Humbucker
LiveWire™ Metal Humbucker
EMG 81

Get back to me please.
I will probably buy two for a nice set of pickups.

I'm partial to the EMG 81 myself. Robert_S used to use Hot LiveWire for strat. At least one or more of his songs at uses those I believe. I think it's quot;Maiden Oilquot; but Robert could tell you for sure. btw, what kind of amp setup are you using ?

EMG 81 would be great for ya... even 2 of 'em, or match it with a different EMG in the neck position.

Rock On

So are you completely set on buying actives?

I will vouch for the EMG 81, 85 amp; the Livewire Hot for Strat. All three kick mucho arse. Never used the Livewire Classic, and I'm up in the air on the Livewire Metal. I hated it until recently, but tried a guitar the other day with one, and it sounded really good.

I am seriously thinking about buying Active....for the guy who asked me about my amp im using a Marshall AVT50 Combo.

Im thinking about buying the Schecter Blackjack Tempest with the 59/JB. I just played the Blackjack PT last night...love the sound.

I was really wondering if Active would sound good for Punk Rock too. Im mainly Punk but I am just now branching into metal, like Atreyu and stuff along those lines. My favorite music is punk...Vandals, NoFx, and even though they arent punk COHEED AND CAMBRIA!!!! See I know that EMG 81s will work with them because the lead singer uses them in his Gibson Explorer.

Since you mostly play punk, I'd stick with Passive pickups.

Active pickups might have too much output for you and might not give you the tone you want.
But I would get the 81, if I had to choose.
I can't say much about the other ones because I've never played them before.Keep rockin.

for punk stuff keep it passive.Active pups are a bit over the top for punk use. From the suggestions i'd take the emg 81

I plan on getting a Schecter Blackjack Tempest in the future. It has a 59/JB set, good for what I am after? Good for some pinch harmonics here and there?

have anyone heard Coheed and Cambria's guitarist Claudio Sanchez play? They aren't exactly Punk or Metal but yeah, anyway, he uses a pair of EMG 81's in a Vintage White Gibson Explorer, his amp, I think is a Triple Rectifyer from Mesa Boogie. I love the way it sounds. May go for that.

Oh, by the way, Active pickups use batteries right? If the guitar doesn't have battery packs built in , where do they put the batteries? Do they install a battery pack for you?

Thanks again guys!

If there is no space in your guitar, then you'll need to drill a hole for the battery.
This is one of the cons from using Active pickups.

Well, can battery packs be professional installed? Or if I call Schecter and tell them to install the battery packs and some emg's do you think that they will?

Have you guys seen the Phil Collen Signature guitar? He has two plastic battery pack holders built into his guitar.

Thanks

yeah in most cases there is enough room in the controls-cavity to hold the battery(use some good tape to keep it from moving around)

I just remembered that EMG makes Passive too!

Do any of you guys know of a good combination that are strong enough for metal but still calm enough for some Punk rock?

Maybe something simular to the 59/JB combo but stronger from emg?

Mabye something like this: from : localhost/say thats its the EMG 81 without the Active!

get back to me please

maybe I could put a EMG H4 in the Bridge and a EMG H4A in the neck....they say thats what they put in Zakk's Epiphone guitar....I have played that and its not that bad....plus no batteries!

Invader.....

Why does everyone rule out the 85? 85 is so damn versatile...and is damn near the same punch!

First I'll start off with....what about the Invader? Can they be used as a neck and bridge pickup? I heard that Doyle Von Frankenstein uses one on his guitars.

To the guy that said something about the EMG 85. I'm not ruleing it out, I'm just looking for the most simple solution for my likeness.

the 85 is good but an 89 is just better(same sound but splitable and that makes it really pracitcal). Also in my ears the 85 sounds a bit weak when i compare it to the 81 and the 60. It's just imo my least favorite emg humbucker.
The invader might be a bit muddy(it's cool but i don't think it would fit for punk). May´be you should get the distortion mayhem set(distortion bridge and neck). This should be more fitting for punk.
