Yes, another thread about wanting an LP tone but too cheap to buy the real deal..
Which would be recommended? Does the Tokai have a veneer top?
My concern with getting an EPI Lp (been playing a few and find the new ones well made) But, how accurate is the LP tone considering they are using Alder wood quite liberally??
Thanks
The Elite LP's, if you're meaning Epi Elitist, are mahogany and are very nice guitars. I've heard lots of good things about Tokai's so you probably can't go wrong with them.
As for the non-Elitist Epi LP, they will be either alder or mahogany. Keep searching until you find a Made in China mahogany wood model. They sound great. I'm a proud of owner of one. The alder ones don't have the mojo.
Another big factor is the neck wood. All three of my epiphones were based on Gibson models which had mahogany necks. The epiphones all had maple necks. They aren't elite / elitists however. There's also Epiphone Japan which isn't available in North America. They're supposed to be really excellent guitars, and they're also finished in nitro.

That's right, don't forget the necks. Mine looks like mahogany based on the grain. The finish is transparent so the grain is easy to see.
Epi Japan are the Elitists...just FYI.

Nope. There are Elitists, and then there are the Japanese Epiphones. The Japanese Epiphones have nitro finishes and Gibson open-book headstocks.

from : localhost/I never saw those before. The only Japanese Epi's I've been familiar with are the Elitists. Those Customs are absolutely gorgeous. Well, add one of those to the never-ending G.A.S. list...lol. I'm a sucker for nice LP Customs, just can't afford 'em.
This one grabbed my eye enough to put in my 'watched items' list.
Buy this!!! from : localhost/cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA:ITamp;rd=1
thanks! Yeah, I have an Epi Ace frehley and it plays great, but it has a maple neck and doesnt have that dark throaty tone. Cuts thru awesome, but I like the LP chunky tone. So, yeah, mahog with mahog neck. Im real impressed with the new epis so I dont rule them out at all, but want the tone. (not concerned with brand) I have Michael Kelly that is kickin too.. its more like a dean evo. Close to the paul tone. Mahog/mahog w quilt veneer
Personally, I kinda like using different type of stuff. Example, my Japanese Squier strat is about the best strat Ive ever played. People scoff cuz its a squier.... Till play or hear it.. So, If the Epi gets me the tone I need, Im there.. Or the Tokai..

Check these clips out.
The epi elites are usually around $1000 and tokai's(MIJ) are around 600-800 for standard ones. Both are made with all mahogony. I think most tokai's have maple tops. Both hit the lp tones exactly. I'm leaning toward getting tokais cause the price is decent and they look great. Problem is the new ones are bought from japan, but you can get MIK ones too from canada, these are just usually a bit less in quality compared to the MIJ. Also you might want to look at burny, greco, and edwards.
AMS just blew out the elitist ebony standard and a couple Sunbursts for $750. I contacted them and they told me they should be getting more in stock.... but i doubt it

Of course this line is called the Limited line (or Japan Limited).
I would actually consider this a new line.
Not the same as the original Epi Japan line that was replaced by the Elitist line. Those were usually veneer or photo flames over plain maple tops.
Also featured poly finishes instead of lacquer like this new Limited line has.
I know the Orville by Gibson (pre Epi Japan)had lacquer finishes.
But, as far as I knew the Epi Japan were basically the same as the Orville line(not the O by G).
Just a name change.
Either way they are all Fuji Gen Gakki made.
There's the Terada plant as well. But, I thought that was for the Semi Acoustics. They may be doing some solids as well.Either way, this is very cool. Nice to see some new Japan made Epi's.
Another note. Japan market Epi Elitists will have the correct headstock.
If you didn't know that already.

It seemed a good number of the $750 ones turned out to be NOS.

Every LP player that has picked up my Epi LP Standard and played it loves it. I bought it used for $400 and threw a Jazz and a '59 in it.
Gripweed,
What year is it? Very cool
